Well, I'm neither one of those worthies, but I
*did* write you both a Haiku _and_ a Sonnet
upon your last requests for same (or have you
forgotten?), so I'll do so again.
A Haiku:
Pop Chanteuse proclaimed:
"Love is a Battlefield;"

A Sonnet:
A Summer's Day is fine for those who stay
At home to while away their dwindling time
By writing sonnets and haiku all day,
Without a care for metre or for rhyme.
But he who takes with him to scs
Naught but a Rhyme to gird him is a fool!
He'll end up as a battered, bloody mess,
Impaled upon some sharper sort of tool...
Let those who would these sanguine fields survey
Equip themselves and go enarmit thence;
Else, surely as the Night begets the Day,
They'll rue the day they spurn'ed such defence!
For oft have those whose journey, once begun
As but a lark, at tourney been undone...

It came as no surprise at all to me
When everyone was baffled by the case:
Who knew what happened to the chimpanzee?
Security was lax, we all agree;
The man in charge was just a waste of space.
It came as no surprise at all to me.
Suspicion fell upon the new trainee;
Co-workers couldn't stand her smarmy face.
Who knew what happened to the chimpanzee?
Her only comment -- "Evil be to he
Who evil thinks" -- caused purists to grimace.
It came as no surprise at all to me.
Was something odd about the fricassee?
The hygiene, critics claimed, was a disgrace.
Who knew what happened to the chimpanzee?
They say the blame was mine to some degree:
The evidence had vanished without trace.
It came as no surprise at all to me
Who knew what happened to the chimpanzee.
Note:
No animals were harmed during the composition of this villanelle.
Readers who are nevertheless concerned about what happened to the
chimpanzee may substitute whatever rhyming anapest they find
appropriate: referee, divorcee, refugee, amputee, SNP, etc.
