The unmanned arial vehicle. (UAV). A nasty piece of work if ever there
was one. A bit like a knife - you can use it for chopping veggies or
for stabbing. Likewise with UAVs. At present we have all manner of
them and the Yanks are way ahead. They can fly them from Washington
(via satellite control) and blow up a wedding party anywhere in the
world. Just like an aircraft only slower and with no on-board pilot.
It is known in military circles that the future of aircraft will have
no pilots. Pilots are too big an investment to lose. So instead the
new pilot is good at X-box and video games. he shoots and kills from
the comport of his armchair.

Now here's the rub - it's not too hard to make a primitive UAV
yourself. Nowadays you can buy or make large model aircraft capable of
holding small explosives. The comms is spread-spectrum and cannot be
jammed.
So very soon we may see a large model aircraft on its way to blow up a
famous monument or to a market-place near you. How can you stop it?
With great difficulty as it is pretty small. Easy to hit if there
happens to be somebody with a machine gun nearby - but then again
maybe not. It can sneak up on you when you least expect it. Israel is
good at making them as are a good few many countries. They can be used
for peaceful purposes of course. Cannot do as much damage as a
conventional missile maybe (thats the home built one I mean) but who
cares? It's the thought that counts. The American ones can do real
damage of course - not just for spotting people with beards.
