Nice to see that as a long standing fan of Capercaillie that Karen
Matheson has been recognised in this list.

Queen honours star-studded Scots
Robbie Coltrane
Robbie Coltrane grew up in Rutherglen
Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, Harry Potter star Robbie Coltrane and
singer Eddi Reader are among the Scots who have been honoured by the
Queen.
Her Majesty's New Year's honours list also includes singer Karen
Matheson, actress Una McLean, businessman Bill Gammell and entrepreneur
Derek Douglas.
Former footballer Gordon Ramsay, 49, becomes an OBE for services to the
hospitality industry.
Coltrane, 55, was given the same honour for services to drama.
Ramsay was initially a professional footballer for Rangers from 1982 to
1985, but moved into cooking after failing to make the grade with the
Glasgow club. As well as being a Michelin star-winning chef, Ramsay has
fronted the Hell's Kitchen reality TV show and his own food show called
The F-Word.
Coltrane, a doctor's son from Rutherglen, made his stage debut at 12,
and went on to become an actor and comedian. He appeared in two Bond
films, but is most acclaimed for his roles in the TV series Cracker and
the Harry Potter movies.
Singer Karen Matheson, from Taynuilt, Argyll, described by Sir Sean
Connery as having "a throat surely touched by the hand of God", is
appointed OBE for services to Scottish music. Her singing career began
when she performed as a child in local village hall ceilidhs on the west
coast, and she recorded for Celtic group Capercaillie's first album in
1984 while still at school. She was one of Capercaillie's founders in
Oban, and released her debut solo album The Dreaming Sea in 1996 during
a break from touring with the group.
Una McLean, the Strathaven-born actress and comedienne who trained at
the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and went on to
success in drama and in panto, becomes an MBE.
She was married to fellow Scots actor Russell Hunter, who died in 2003.
Also becoming an MBE is singer Eddi Reader, whose performing career
began in the early 1980s when she travelled around Europe with a team of
circus and performance artists. There followed spells as a backing
vocalist for a punk band, a backing singer with the Eurythmics and a No
1 hit single, Perfect, with the group Fairground Attraction in 1988.
Struck oil
Among the prominent Scots from the business honoured in the awards was
Bill Gammell, who has received a knighthood. His Cairn Energy oil firm
struck black gold in an oilfield it bought from Shell in north west
India. Gammell went to Fettes College in Edinburgh with the young Tony
Blair and, as a youngster was a family friend of the young George W
Bush. He is a former Scottish rugby international with five caps to his
credit.
Fettes
Gammell went to Fettes College in Edinburgh with Tony Blair. He founded
Cairn Energy and became chief executive when it was listed in 1989. The
big time came in 2004 when Cairn struck oil in Rajasthan in a field it
had bought from Shell. Cairn's shares, priced at £1.92 when the firm
floated in 1989, are now nudging the £20 mark. But Gammell has long been
wary of complacency. "One moment you are flavour of the month and the
next you are an idiot," he said last year.
Entrepreneur Derek Douglas, who helped set up a network of pioneering
cancer care centres, becomes a CBE. He lost his 37-year-old wife Sandra
to cancer in 1995 and afterwards chaired the Maggie's Centre charity. Dr
Douglas spent more than seven years spearheading the Edinburgh-based
charity's growth, recruiting high-profile supporters including JK
Rowling and Kirsty Wark to help fundraising efforts.
G8 summit
Also honoured were Kim Winser, chief executive of Pringle Scotland, who
becomes an OBE; journalist William Chisholm, who becomes an MBE and
Wilma Finlay, of the Cream o' Galloway Dairy Company, who also becomes
an MBE.
In the world of sport, Olympic administrator Craig Reedie, from Bridge
of Weir, has been knighted.
As a member of the International Olympic Committee he was involved in
the organisation of the 2004 Athens and the 2008 Beijing games, and
played a major role in the successful London bid for the 2012 event.
Also knighted, for services to neurosurgery and victims of head
injuries, is Professor Graham Teasdale, a renowned expert on head
injuries, and president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons
of Glasgow.
Alexander Moffat, head of painting at Glasgow School of Art, becomes an
OBE for services to art.
Three senior police officers also feature in the honours list, with each
awarded the Queen's Police Medal - Tayside Deputy Chief Constable
William Bald, Strathclyde Chief Superintendent James Green, and Tayside
Chief Superintendent Brian Powrie.
Both the Tayside officers were heavily involved in policing the G8
summit of world leaders at Gleneagles.
