Tom; I have only recently joined this newsgroup, but can see
your point. I'm also guilty of lowering the tone with some of my
posts, but hopefully the remainder will make up for the
intellectual deficit of the bad ones.
Maybe one particular bampot will reconsider his method of
communication and start making sense for a change. I think we
all know who I'm referring to :-)

Has this any scientific justification ? References ?
Hmmm. You haven't actually shown that you are anything other than a
"pathetic loser" yourself, Mr Ingram. It is also a risky business (a)
top-posting and (b) quibbling about spelling or grammar in this
newsgroup.
Incidentally, I don't believe that Al-Qaeda (the real ones) are
exactly lacking in brains. After all, they have managed to pull off
some quite cleverly planned atrocities, grabbing the World's attention
in ways of which the likes of the IRA, or the Israeli government,
could only dream......
As for s.c.s., any responsibility for it "going down the tubes" is
down to all of us, not just one person. In any case, just when was its
golden age, when all was peace, love and understanding? I've been
around here pretty much since it started, and I can't remember such a
time!

Mr C !
Welcome back, long time no hear.
How are things with you and yours?
Improved since your last appearance, I trust.
Hi Nigel...!
Alistair McGregor, an expatriate Scottish man living in America, was
recently diagnosed as clinically depressed, tanked up on anti-depressants
and scheduled for controversial Shock Therapy when doctors realized he
wasn't depressed at all.............only Scottish.
Mr. McGregor, a Scottish man whose characteristic pessimism and gloomy
perspective were interpreted as serious clinical depression, was led on a
nightmare journey through the American psychiatric system.
Doctors described McGregor as suffering from Pervasive Negative Anticipation
- a belief that everything will turn out for the worst, whether it's trains
arriving late, Scotland's chances at winning any international sports event
or even his own prospects to get ahead in life and achieve his dreams.
"The satisfaction Mr. McGregor seemed to get from his pessimism seemed
particularly pathological," reported the doctors.
"They put me on everything - Lithium, Prozac, St John's Wort, Ginseng",said
Mr. McGregor." They even told me to sit in front of a big light for an hour
a day or I'd become suicidal. I kept telling them this was all pointless and
they said that it was exactly that sort of attitude that got me here in the
first place."
Running out of ideas, his doctors finally resorted to a course of "weapons
grade MDMA", the only noticeable effect of which was six hours of speedy
repetitions of the phrases "mustn't grumble" and "not too bad, really". It
was then that Mr. McGregor was referred to a psychotherapist.
"Suicidal?" Dr Isaac Horney explored Mr. McGregor's family history and
couldn't believe his ears. "His story of a childhood growing up in the drab
back streets of a windswept grey town with treeless streets of identical
run-down houses where it rained every day, passionately backing a football
team who never won, seemed to be an idealized depressive memory--I thought
all that was a myth..."
Mr. McGregor had six months of therapy but seemed to mainly want to talk
about the weather - how miserable and cold it was in winter and later how
difficult and wet it was in summer. I felt he wasn't responding to therapy
at all and so I recommended drastic action - namely ECT or shock treatment".
"I was all strapped down on the table and they were about to put the rubber
bit in my mouth when the psychiatric nurse picked up on my accent," said Mr.
McGregor. "I remember her saying 'Oh dear, I think we're making terrible
mistake'." Nurse Alice Sheen was a big fan of Scottish comedy giving her an
understanding of the Scottish psyche. "Classic comedy characters like Chic
Murray, Will Fife and The Crankies, all hopeless cases with no chance of
ever doing well or escaping their circumstances," she explained to the
baffled US medics. "In Scotland, being depressed to the point of suicidal is
considered the norm and is not seen as pathological at all." Identifying Mr.
McGregor as Scottish changed his diagnosis from 'clinical depression' to
'rather quaint and charming' and he was immediately discharged from
hospital, with a selection of brightly colored leaflets and an "I love New
York" T-shirt.

WHAT??? Do you not know about "Once Were Warriors"?
That was a *sensation* in EnZed; first time the issue of spousal
abuse and drinking among Maori and Pacific Islanders had been
openly addressed.
It did very well Up Here, especially to the art house audience.

"Heavenly Creatures"
"The Piano"

Yeah - that's right - we would take three months longer to die than everyone
else. Except of course for the worlds 'leaders' who would take over three
years to die in various holes in the ground.
'Openly' being the operative word.
Wife beating is still an accepted part of the culture among a sizable
proportion of the population here - including the 'white pigs'.
One subject that is still taboo is the prevalence of child abuse. No-one
seems to want to make a film about *that* just yet but the figures are
appalling. The incidence of mental health problems is also very high as are
drug addiction, gang warfare, the murder rate and robberies - especially
house-breaking. Tradesmen even steal each others tools on building sites!
Children are still routinely knocked senseless in the boarding schools by
'prefects' whilst teachers turn a blind eye - toughens 'em up for the rugby
which is the single most important thing in NZ by miles.
The racism is so breathtakingly casual that one almost misses it. ie.from a
sweet little old lady next door:
"Lovely day now isn't it? Sorry to hear you've had the 'flu dear - its the
Asian students y'know, jist riddled with diseases - I always drink lots and
lots of hot tea and lemon, have you tried it."
Despite all the problems its still probably the best 'all-round' country in
the world though - the only people that don't seem to appreciate it are the
Kiwis.
The psyche born of isolation and greed. When they travel they tend to go
walkabout for a couple of years and save up some money to bring home. You
can't just hop on an eazyjet down to Athens from here. Even the Pacific
Islands are 1000s of miles out.
Thailand is long haul from here too - about 12 hours.
Most of them come back though. Once they realise that EU wages are sucked up
by EU prices. And that what they think is a 'rat-race' in Auckland is really
like Hemel Hempstead pre Beatlemania.

I liked it too - just found it a bit puzzling as I couldn't connect it too
anything I had been saying. That happens to me all the time in this ng so I
didn't really think anything of it.
You were almost there !
It's "Despair" not "Weep"
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said : "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear --
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."
