Here's something worthwhile for you to do.
Hats for Preemies...
Use 4 ply washable yarn and size 6 needles. Cast on the appropriate
number of stitches for the size you want to knit. Rib in k1, p1 for
1". In stockinette, knit to the size needed.
X-LARGE PREEMIE: cast on 58 stitches
1" ribbing (k1,p1)
4.5" stockinette
Total length = 5" to 5.5"
LARGE PREEMIE: cast on 50 stitches
1" ribbing (k1,p1)
3/5" to 4"
Total length = 4.5" to 5"
MEDIUM PREEMIE: cast on 44 stitches
1" ribbing (k1,p1)
3" to 3.5" stockinette
Total length = 4" to 4.5"
SMALL PREEMIE: cast on 40 stitches
1" ribbing (k1,p1)
2.5" to 3" stockinette
Total length = 3.5" to 4"
X-SMALL PREEMIE: cast on 36 stitches
1" ribbing (k1,p1)
2.5" stockinette
Total length = 3.5"
After knitting the piece to the approximate dimensions, draw all
stitches together tightly at the top by weaving yarn through all
the stitches on the needle. Knot securely. Weave together the seam
using yarn. Optional: Make a pom pom or bow for the top.
Cheers, Helen

Ahh! So *that's* what's meant by 'A nightcap? - with or without?'
I've always requested 'without', but simply because I had no idea mine hosts
were merely referring to pom poms - could have been anything.
Fancy that! Me of all people learning something from a daft, crabbit, little
auld wifie.

I'll just step out 'til this all blows over shall I?
You, like me, obviously absorbed in the lesson of 9/11...

Are you a contributor to Newborns in Need, then?

You are a bold man, Adam Whyte-Settlar.
And you bid fair to age no more.
You should have written -
I'll just step out_of_ this 'til all _the_blows _are_ over, shall I?
Me too.

I don't know if that's what our local hospital calls it, but you could say
so. I love to knit and crochet and have given afghans to all of my family,
so now it's the homeless who get them:)

Ah, that reminds me of a practicle use for a heavy cast iron skillet...
Another thread perhaps, I wouldn't want anyone to get ideas.

That's what it's called down here...preemie
hats and, sadly, burial gowns.
I think the local chapter works with six regional
hospitals.
