Miami banker gives $60 million of his own to employees
BY MARTHA BRANNIGAN
Lots of bosses say they value their employees. Some even mean
it.
And then there's Leonard Abess Jr.
After selling a majority stake in Miami-based City National
Bancshares last November, all he did was take $60 million of the
proceeds -- $60 million out of his own pocket -- and hand it to his
tellers, bookkeepers, clerks, everyone on the payroll. All 399 workers
on the staff received bonuses, and he even tracked down 72 former
employees so they could share in the windfall.
For longtime employees, the bonus -- based on years of
service -- amounted to tens of thousands of dollars, and in some
cases, more than $100,000.
At a time when financial titans are being paraded before
Congress to explain how they blew billions on executives' bonuses even
as they received a taxpayer bailout, the big-hearted banker's selfless
deed stands out.
''I retired seven years ago, and all of a sudden I get this
wonderful letter and phone call,'' said Evelyn J. Budde, who spent 43
years at City National Bank of Florida, rising to vice president.
''I was shocked,'' said William Perry. In 43 ½ years at City
National, he climbed from janitor to vice president. Like many
longtime City National employees, he forged an unbreakable bond with
the bank that continued into retirement. Perry returns regularly for
the annual employees' dinner.
He's going to be one of the good ones.
I can tell.
The Arch Conservatives ("Neocon" is so yesterday) are already nit picking
away.
They are indeed a petty lot.
(Enter Fred, stage right)
;=)
Waaaay cool. Unfortunately I missed Obama's speech yesterday, but
love to read of these kinds of stories of benevolence.

You missed a great speech! He's quite the orator :)

Nah, I'll leave that to the governors who are smart enough to

But ... but ... all bankers are evil Republicans. Conway told me so.
I agree, Helen. Very inspiring speech. I'm hopeful, for the first
time in years.

Not all.
Most.
The Mom and Pop banks are full of nice folks.
(Has your banker invited you to Vegas yet?)
Things will be different around here, Fred.
Life is going to be a wee bit tougher for Arch Conservatives.
President Obama is already flat out stating that the rich WILL carry a
bigger share of the tax burden.
That ought to grind some Conservative teeth!

Not like Vegas is much of a trip given that Fred's in Arizona.

I still expect a lot of you folks are going to be very surprised at
just who winds up being counted among the 'rich' when all is said and
done....

True enough, Deirdre. And of course we have a lot of local casinos as
well...

With the banks paying all the expenses with their bailout money?
What blue blooded arch conservative could turn it down?
Oh yes.
Arizona is a hotbed of gambling.
The Mexican Jumping Bean races alone draw thousands of gamblers.......
Well, yes, dammit, "Rosebuds".
Apparently now, the rich are those making more than $250,000 a year.
Mexico beckons to you, Fred..........
Think 'Indian Casinos', Conway. Surely you've heard of them?
We have a LOT of Indians around here....

I wasn't aware the Native Americans in Arizona had gotten into supporting
casinos.
Are the Apaches involved?
Nope.
I'm talking about yet another memory lapse.
Problem is decent housing in Mexico and Central America has gone through the
roof.

Yep. I think they have (at least) three of them.

I'll bet no one tries to beat that crowd out of a gambling debt.............
