I've been in a totally revamped version of the 154 between St Petersburg
and Moscow operated by Vukhovno Air (IIRC), this may explain the
difference
in storage bins.
I also once had the doubtful pleasure of flying in an Aeroflot 154 1st
class.
This was an international flight.
The legroom was so dramatic I had problems reaching the table in front
of me.
The woodwork was impressive.

DC-4 and DC-6 aircraft.
Early model 707s and 727s had this sort of overhead storage as well. IIRC
it was often referred to as a "hat rack" and not an overhead storage area
for your carry on luggage. Times have changed, I suppose in those days
airlines didn't lose luggage as often as they do now either.

It also must have been faster to get off the plane after it landed
not having to wait for everyone getting out their ten pieces of
luggage.
The Tu134 doesn not have bins but a long "shelf" with bin-like depressions.
All the Tu154's I've flown had bins. The size is a tad smaller than on most
similar sized western planes.
