In 1989, following widespread public anger over the results of local
government elections that spring, many citizens applied for exit
visas, or left the country illegally. In August 1989 Hungary removed
its border restrictions and unsealed its border and more than 13,000
people left East Germany by crossing the "green" border via
Czechoslovakia into Hungary and then on to Austria and West Germany.

*On November 9th = 9/11
the Berlin Wall "fell" (a common term denoting the opening of border
crossings, although illustrated with TV pictures of some impromptu
attempts to dismantle parts of the Wall), and in the following days
increasing numbers of East Germans took advantage of this to visit
West Germany or West Berlin (where they were met by
*West German government gifts of DM100 each, called "greeting money")

. In this context the whole socialist system of East Germany was
unraveled when its parliament voted on December 1 that year to abolish
the constitutional provision granting the SED the leading role in the
state. Egon Krenz, the Politburo and the Central Committee resigned
two days later.
