Innuendos of a Jewish conspiracy are very much in the air in Washington. They come in
the wake of leaks that the FBI is investigating whether Pentagon analyst Lawrence
Franklin turned over classified information to AIPAC lobbyists.
The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times and the rest of the prestige media are
feeding off a flow of revelations - evidently from the FBI itself - that the
"conspiracy" is even wider then first revealed.
Israel's working assumption should be that the scandal stems from bureaucratic
competition between neoconservatives and their opponents within the administration.
The opponents, who have lost key foreign policy debates over 9/11, Iraq, and are now
contesting what to do about Iran, are hoping for a change in the White House.
Their assessments were rejected in the aftermath of 9/11, so they tended to suspect
that Israeli interests had played a part in influencing the administration's policy
toward al-Qaida, Iraq and Iran.
Every four years, around election time, Washington intrigues seem to chip away at
Israel's integrity. It is a phenomenon that crosses party lines and does not
necessarily have anti-Semitic overtones. Often it is the result of competition
between candidates for senior positions, or just plain jealousy.
On the eve of the 2000 elections, for instance, the US and Israeli press reported on
that ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk's security clearance had been lifted and that
Indyk had been interrogated for supposedly making improper use of his personal
computer. Turns out that during long flights, Indyk had written up summaries of
secret conversations with world leaders in order to save precious time upon his
return to the State Department.
The story died a natural death. Who remembers? Just the Indyk family.
And who remembers the 1997 "mega affair" during the Clinton administration? At the
time, the Mossad's deputy chief of station in Washington had a telephone conversation
from her home with her number one who was on vacation in Israel.
She mentioned "mega." American intelligence operatives monitoring the call assumed
they were discussing a mole; until they learned that "mega" was simply the Mossad's
nickname for the entire CIA Middle East desk.
There are a number of reasons why the Franklin affair is destined to blow away like
election dust.
a.. Who will pick it up? John Kerry supporters are apparently the source of the
leaks, but Kerry himself is fighting for Jewish support against a pro-Israel
incumbent.
And why would Bush want to undermine his standing with the Jewish community?
a.. American Jews are loyal to America. This should be crystal-clear. Most of them
are the second generation of immigrants whose parents and grandparents taught them
patriotism a home, at school, at synagogue and at university.
This is true of AIPAC staffers Steve Rosen and Martin Foyer, who are mentioned in the
Franklin affair; it was true of Indyk, Dennis Ross and Sandy Berger during the
Clinton administration; it is true of Paul Wolfowitz, Douglas Feith, Richard Perle
and David Wormser in the current administration.
To understand this it is enough to look at how their lips move and their eyes shine
when the "Star-Spangled Banner" is played at the annual AIPAC conference.
Their Judaism is important to them. Israel is important to them. But when they want
to help they will look for the Israeli interest tangential to the American interest -
and not the other way around.
Jonathan Pollard is the exception that proves the rule.
a.. If Washington is the capital of professionals, AIPAC is the epitome of
professionalism. Don't forget that the papers prepared by AIPAC are addressed to
Capitol Hill and not to Jerusalem's government offices.
For 50 years AIPAC has wisely operated as a pro-Israeli American lobby, and climbed
from one achievement to another without fanfare.
a.. The US capital is full of intrigue and schemes. Whatever happened in that
restaurant the day Franklin went over to the table of a staffer from the Israeli
embassy and the senior AIPAC official happens every day.
Everyone has expense accounts and everyone meets everyone else to exchange
information. And at the end of the day, everyone writes assessment papers.
It is no accident that nobody touched the secret document; that is against the rules.
The real secret contacts - and important documents - are left for the authorized
intelligence bodies of both countries; they don't happen at gourmet restaurants.
Plainly, the scandal may arouse fears among the American partners of Israeli
diplomats operating in Washington. This too shall pass.
But it is worth noting that Israel's response to the episode has been amateurish.
When all is said and done, the Franklin affair will go the way of all the previous
"scandals" that were motivated by politics and personality. And the only ones who
will remember will be those whose names were so unfairly besmirched.

AIPAC, however, help secure huge financial and military support for Israel.
$10 million a week to be precise.
As a gift.
Never to be repaid.
All out of the US Taxpayers pocket.
This support, which also includes aircraft, tanks, rockets, bulldozers and
missiles etc is then used to help Jews murder thousands of innocent
Palestinians. It's also used to protect a bunch of Jewish religious fanatics
who live illegally in Occupied Land.
AIPAC don't help solve the Israel/Palestine problem, they are part of it.

Why don't the Saudis, Egyptians, Jordanians and United Arab Emirates turn
over their
vast arsenals of US arms to the Palestinians? Israel would love that too,
because then
it could DOUBLE the size of its US supplied weapons for free. But in
actually, the debt
owed to the US is carried on ISraeli books as debt, however, since the
debt is constantly turned over, and since the interest rate is less than
inflation, in fact Israel is getting most of its heavy arms from the US
not for free, but at a fraction of cost.
That is why AIPAC doesn't complain too much about the US aid and arms
sales to the Arabs.
But personally, I'd rather their be a world aid and arms embargo on both
sides. But the
US defense industry doesn't like that idea either. It wants to sell both
sides, and have
taxpayers pay for part of it, and COngressional leaders from districts
with arms subcontractors (and there are many) are not going to lobby for
job losses in their
districts, So the status quo remains in place. Israel now has more tanks
than people, and
could invade Russia. But it really wouldn't need any of it if the US arms
industry wasn't
eager for sales to the Arabs surrounding Israel. SO it is Catch-22
situation. It is out
of control, but no one knows how to stop it.

So is the US industrial/military complex that is arming both sides to the
hilt. The
PEntagon doesn't mind because it lowers unit costs for US military
purchases. It all evens out and the US isn't losing a dime, because the
cost of aid is offset by the
lower cost of large scale production enabled by large arms sales to the
Arabs and Israel.
Israel is forced to "swallow" more planes and tanks and helicopters it
would otherwise
need, and must maintain, because of the large arms sales to the Arabs. IN
effect, the US
has been fueling both sides of ARab-Israel arms race now for nearly 30
years.

You answer the question yourself - because some of them pay for it.

AIPAC dictates US policy in the Middle East and several US politicians
including Bush Senior have paid the price for standing up to them.
Classic example:
In 1991, Israeli Prime Minister Yizhak Shamir, himself a former Terrorist,
asked the first Bush administration for $10 Billion in loan guarantees in
order, he said, to provide settlement for the Russian Jews.
Israel had encourage over a million Jews from Eastern Europe to move to
Israel yet they wanted the US taxpayer to pay for it.
Bush senior had already turned his nose up at a request from Congress to
give Israel an additional $650 million to compensate them for sitting out
the Gulf War, but gave in when he realised his opposition would be
overridden.
So, he told Shamir, the former terrorist, that he could only have the money
if Israel would freeze settlement building and promise that no Russian Jews
would be resettled in the West Bank.
Shamir, the former terrorist, refused and immediately called on the American
Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) to organise the American Jewish
communities to rally in support of the loan guarantees.
A letter, which was drafted by AIPAC, was signed by more than 240 members of
the House demanding Bush approved the loan, 77 senators also signed on to
supporting the legislation.
ON September12, 1991, Jewish lobbyists descended on Washington in such
numbers Bush called a televised press conference in which he complained
that:
"1000 Jewish Lobbyists are on Capital Hill against little old me" he said.
It was a BIG mistake.
The next day, Tom Dine, AIPAC's Executive Director, declared that:
"September 12, 1991, is a day that will live in infamy"
Similar comments were also offered by other Jewish Leaders, who even accused
Bush of anti-Semitism. But not only that, his friends in the media turned
against him as well, they not only criticised him, but started to highlight
the faults in the economy and his running of the country.
There was no looking back for Bush, it was all downhill from there on.
His Jewish vote dropped from around 38% in 1988 to no more than 12%, some
estimates believe as low as 8% - he was finished, no thanks to AIPAC and the
Jewish Lobby.
Look at Bush II when he demanded Sharon withdraw his troops from Jenin:
"Enough is enough" he said.
He was immediately attacked and faced criticism from his own party as well
as in the press from rabid Zionists like William Saffire, who said Bush had:
"Become a wavering ally as Israel fights for survival."
A week later, Bush declared Ariel Sharon:
"A man of peace"
Oh yes, AIPAC wield far too much power in American politics alright.

AIPAC should be disbanded along with any other Political Action
Committee(s) who represent the political interests of other countries.
Those countries should be discussing the common interests through
their respective ambassadors and not by bribing our elected
representatives with PAC money. Our senators and congressmen are
elected to office to represent Americans, not foreign governments or
their interests in the United States. These PACs work, not in the
best interests of America, but instead to undermine the right of
Americans to vote and expect their representatives to represent their
collective interests above all.
If you are Jewish and honor America above all other nations, stand up
and denounce the radical Zionists who used you to infiltrate our
government and demand their removal. Israel is not the 51st state,
and their interests are not our own.
