I have been preached to by Muslims of all hue and color how great a
religion Islam is! Muslims have never failed to insist that theirs is
the most tolerant faith, that Islam nurtures the flowering all all
streams of thoughts.

If this is the case, can someone enlighten me as to how writings of two
ordinary mortals can hurt / blaspheme Islam or the prophet in any
manner? I am specifically referring to the incident in which two
university students have been sentenced to death in Tehran for writing
some play that is perceived to be an insult to Islam.

If Islam is so great a religion, my understanding is writings of
ordinary mortals must not hurt it. A lot of garbage is written about
Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Sikhism, etc. However, I am yet to
find some priest, rabbi, panda or guru pass a fatwa demanding the death
of anyone who said/wrote anything against their respective faiths.

Perhaps, Islam is not that great as it is made out. For if it was so
great, how can mortals such as Rushidie, Tasleema or two wayward Iranian
university students ever cause it any harm.

in eastern cultures irrespective of religion written word has the same
weight as action. khushwant singh (a nn muslim) perhaps the greates writer
in india and an advisor t viking publications advised them that rushdie
knew the above fact and has written the book to generate controversy 4
sales. he advise viking penguin not to publish the book.
a book insulting hinduism in india would generate the same controversy.
its the misunderstandng of the east and the west. in the east honor is
paramount in the west freedom of expression is.
thats is why the pope, president bush, rajv gandhi of india all condemned
rushdies book.
rushdie fooled the west as did tasleema for fame and money.

Dear Shaik,
The first step in improving yourself is realizing that words are words
and actions are actions.
Censorship is the surest way to keep any Society stagnant and ignorant.

It is even odder that the only publicly recorded urine-drinker viz, Morarji
Desai who lived till the age of 99, was awarded the highest civilian honour
of the Homeland of Muslims, Pakistan Nishan-e-Pakistan.

This proves two things.
If you drink your own urine a) You will live till the age of 99 and 2) you
will get the highest civilian honour from Pakistan

I agree with you on this point that the average level of intelligence of a
Muslim and a Swine must be pretty equal.

The key question is -  How can the act of ordinary mortals hurt the work of Allah if he is so great, powerful and all forgiving.  The actions of Muslim leaders as well as the Muslim population reiterates one thing - Islam is an insecure faith.  It is for this reason that Islam must snuff out lives of anyone that challenges it.

Your observation on the hold of religion on the people is flawed.  If religion had such a hold as you have suggested, the social reformation of Hinduism that resulted in the discarding of such medieval practices as Sati, Castism, etc. would not have taken place.  Logically the people who promoted such causes would have met the same fate as Rushidie.  Neither would Hinduism tolerate the birth of other religions such as Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism all of which were born as a consequence of the degeneration of the Hindu society of the day.  Neither would the social reformation that took place within Christianity, the break-up of the Catholic church, the condemnation of the Conquisition ever take place.

Perhaps, you must more appropriately state that Muslims are of a fanatic disposition (and it would not matter where they lived).
