Husain's Paris Suite fetches a record Rs 4.5 crore
Ella Datta
New Delhi, December 30

Contemporary Indian art has reached a new high. A record price of $1
million (Rs 4.5 crore) was reached at a private sale of 22 small and
medium paintings, which make up the Paris Suite, by Maqbool Fida
Husain to mark his 88th birthday.

The buyer is a London-based NRI who is well-known in Indian art
circles. He heads an MNC.

The price topped the earlier record of $330,000 (Rs 1.5 crore) fetched
by Celebration, a Tyeb Mehta triptych. It was sold at a Christie's
auction in New York last year.

Paris Suite is part of a large exhibition, Husain at 88, which also
includes Mumbai Suite, Kolkata Suite and Delhi Suite.

The show made its debut in Kolkata and was later brought to Delhi. It
will open in Mumbai on January 14.

To commemorate the event, the three galleries sponsoring the
exhibition — Galerie 88, Vadehra Art Gallery and Pundole Gallery
— have brought out a book. The buyer saw the works in the
publication and showed interest in buying.

Before the show's debut, sceptics had dismissed it as yet another
gimmick by the great showman, sometimes described as the Amitabh
Bachchan of Indian art. When it premiered, however, artists and
critics were left surprised by the energy, verve and freshness of many
of the paintings.

Speaking to HT from Mumbai, Husain expressed his happiness at the
sale. "I am so happy that Indian contemporary art is at last getting
the recognition it deserves," he said. "For the past 50 years, Indian
art always reached excellent standards but unfortunately works are
judged by how much they sell for. And so by those standards, Indian
art is getting the much-deserved recognition. This price compares
favourably with international prices."

Moral of the story:
Moment you throw Mohammed's arsewipe Koran to gutter, you reap riches.
Koran would never allow you to paint pictures. This old fox Husain
still seem to retain a functioning brain.

islamic about that? According to allaaaahha no image or picture of any kind
is allowed in Islam. Or, muhhamad just lied.
