' The old Muhammadan books and the tone of their writings do not teach the
followers of Islam independence of thought, perspicacity and simplicity; nor
do they enable them to arrive at the truth of matters in general; on the
contrary, they deceive and teach men to veil their meaning, to embellish
their speech with fine words, to describe things wrongly and in irrelevant
terms, to flatter with false praise... to puff theselves up with pride,
haughtyness, vanity and self-conceit, to hate their fellow creatures, to
have no sympathy with them, to speak with exaggeration, to leave the history
of the past uncertain and to relate facts like tales and stories.'

Syed Ahmed Khan (1873).

Sir Syed Ahmed , a petty official in the state bureaucracy took the ulema
head on, he combated obscurantism with great verve and vigour. He
established a scientific society in 1864 with the declared aim of
translating English books on political economy, history and philosophy.
This was anathema to the theologians but their criticisms merely goaded him
further to outrage their sensibilities.
The clash betwen Ahmed's pro-British modernism and the ulema continued for
several decades. Ahmed was allowed to set up a college in Aligarh (now
Aligarh Muslim Univ) to educate muslims in the virtues of science and
loyalty to the empire. The ulema divided into competing seminaries, the
most prominent of which, Deoband, developed a layer of divines who regularly
preached rebellion against the Raj, and on occasion attempted to carry it
out. The tragedy of Indian Muslims and India was that, no force existed
that was capable of synthesizing Ahmed's rationalism and the antimperalist
political thrust of the Deoband.

Sir Syed Ahmed Khan tried to chart a modern course for Indian Muslims, he
started Aligarh Muslim university, tried to inculcate scientific temperament
in Muslim youth, strongly opposed obscurantism of the ulema. Its upto you to
decide whether he was a true Muslim, but please refrain from your liberal
use of adjectives.

How exactly were Indian muslims marginalized and forced into alternate
homeland?

Reformists visit and fine tune society, prepare it to face newer challenges
and opportunities, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan's was one such reformer. He was a
good role model, Pakistan would need someone like him to get back into
course.

Well, I don't know much about Hinduism. But here is something that
I do know. Some of the greatest minds ever to have contemplated the
universe have arrived at the fundamental truths that form the
corner-stone of Indian Philosophical thought. It forms the foundation
of the religious beliefs of the people of India. Upon this sturdy
foundation is built the religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and
Sikhism.

That Indian philosophical thought has no parallel there is ample
evidence. The modern Western philosophers, scientists, teachers,
and intellectuals in general have delighted in learning Indian
thought and have incorporated what they learnt from India in their
view of the world. They are too numerous to name exhaustively. So
I will just throw in a few names: Schopenhauer, Einstein, Oppenheimer,
Thoreau, Emerson, ...

Now I don't mean to brag, but Indian thought and Hinduism have had
teachers which epitomize enlightenment. Let's name just a few:
Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Vivekananda, Krishnamurty, Sri Aurobindo...
Go to any bookstore and scan their philosophy and religion section
and check out the books of the masters--all pay homage to that
exalted system of thought from India.

Now compare that to what Islam has attained. A following that strikes
terror whereever it goes. It kills and destroys whatever it cannot
understand and there is little it can understand because it is
devoid of any real understanding of the world. It is stuck somewhere
in the imagination of some belligerent Arabs of 14 centuries ago.
One would be hard pressed to name a single Western intellectual who
has ever touched it except to heap scorn on it. It is reviled by any
person of any intellectual capacity as the ravings of an uneducated
narrow-minded megalomaniac.

If you disagree with me, please feel free to counter my arguments
with a little evidence. For example, tell me the name of one single
individual of recognized intellectual standing who has ever been
moved to embrace Islamic thought. Difficult task, isn't it?
But Islam does find followers by the millions. That explains it,
doesn't it? Narrow minded bigots and people of limited intellectual
capacity you do find by the hundreds of millions. And of these
some are exposed to Islam and some are born into it. But not one
single person who is educated and knows anything about world ever
becomes a Muslim.

Therefore, go and examine the causes of why Islam is so poor a
form of theism. Meditate on what it is in Islam that strikes
terror in the hearts of minds of thinking people.

Regards,
Atanu

These remarks are true today as they were back then. Islam and Muslims have been
summed up very well.
