i remember reading somewhere about a group of american guys who went to
visit him in his little village late in his life. he asked how many of them
had fired a mosin-nagant like his. they all put up their hands. he asked how
many of them owned a nosin-nagant. they all put up their hands. apparently
he found it to be quite funny.

according to wiki, he once had the bottom half of his face blown off by a
round from an enemy sniper.

"On March 6 1940, Häyhä was shot in the jaw during combat. The bullet
tumbled upon impact and left his head. He was picked up by fellow
soldiers who said "half his head was missing". Shortly after the war,
Häyhä was promoted straight from corporal to second lieutenant"

This may be unusual for Finland, but here in USA, most State
Department officials, who get promoted, were actually born with the
upper half of their heads missing.
