Nordics and Estonia top the Press Freedom Index 2009

The lates Press Freedom Index was published yesterday by the organization Reporters Without Borders.

 

Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden shared the first position, while Estonia was ranked 6th immediately after the leading five countries. Iceland was 9th, Lithuania 10th and Latvia 13th.

 

All in all an excellent result for the eight northernmost countries in the world.

 

Of the 175 investigated countries Russia could be found near the bottom as number 153 and on its way down since the previous list.

 

An old saying by H.L. Mencken comes to mind: 'Freedom of the press belongs to those who own one.'

PS: The US press sucks (by omission) anymore. To read what is going on
in the US, I have to read British press.

PPS: But it's still better than the russkie crap. Putin just assumed
total political control of all russian radio stations this week.
