Umu Igbo,

Please read and decide for yourself. You will see the level of
scourge that Nowamgbe Omoigui will go to rejoice at the calamity of
the Igbos, including Mid-Western Igbos. Below is an excerpt (p.17
of 25) of a lecture speech that was delivered by Nowamgbe A. Omoigui
at the Nigerian Independence Day Celebration - sponsored by the Nigerian
Women Association in Columbia, South Carolina, on October 3, 1998 - at the
Holiday Inn Express, 773 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, South Carolina. Please
read on:

> ==============================Begin===========================

WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE RECAPTURE OF BENIN CITY?
By
Nowamgbe A. Omoigui

"Unfortunately, therefore, temptation to seek revenge against Ibos
was very strong shortly after federal troops arrived. Further,
mischievous elements used the situation to settle scores against old
enemies simply by REPORTING them to federal troops for "harboring Ibos". An
uncle of mine, for example, was aved from execution at Ugonioba by the quick
intervention of Colonel Murtala Muhammed himself. A few criminals even
changed property deeds for housing, domestic plots, and plots on Rubber
plantations(belonging to Igbos), on the presumption that the Ibo owners
would not return.

Many MIDWESTERN IBOS who had behaved in a very high-handed manner
while the Okonkwo regime was in power, anticipated vengeance and fled along
with Biafrans before the arrival of federal troops. But others who had
nothing to do with the Biafran invasion remained behind only to find
themselves being identified (by the Edos) for "interrogation." As USUAL in
such situations, small businesses were ransacked if they were known to
belong to Ibo traders. Children of mixed ethnic marriages had to be
sheltered as their desperate mothers frantically foreswore any relationship
with Ibo men. Many changed their names and fled to the villages.

Because it was known that some Biafran soldiers had been cut-off
from retreat, any suspicious looking physically fit character in
underwear or disheveled civilian clothes was pointed out (by the
Edos) to the federal troops for SUMMARY JUDGEMENT. At roadblocks,
grim-looking soldiers would frequently ask passing vehicles whether
they were carrying any Ibos. As Umeorah put it, hundres of Ibo
bodies, many STRIPPED and SHOT full of HOLES, were SCOOPED into DUMP TRUCKS
and carted off to common graves or to the nearby BENIN RIVER, others were
left to ROT in the blistering sun.

Colonel Murtala Mohammed became "larger than life." Some modern day
authors even refer to him as "Monty of the Midwest" after Field
Marshall Bernard Montgomery of Britain. Time magazine hailed him as
the Commander of the "brutally efficient" Second Division of the
Nigerian Army.

======================END==========================

MY COMMENT: What is most curious and nauseating about this speech by
Nowa Omoigui was that it was made to an Association of Nigerian
Women as part of celebration of Nigeria's Independence. Igbo tragedy
has become a show-case for independence celebration, a time of
"happiness" rather than "sorrow." This is not a speech in the real
sense of the word, it is celebration of "others'" death. Now you have heard
it all from the mouth of Nowa Omoigui. You now know how far the enemy can
go. May those like Nowa Omoigui who rejoice at the calamity of the Igbos in
Nigeia live to merit it a thousand fold.
Umeam.

CQAN YOU PLEASE POST THE ENTIRE CONTENT OF THIS 25 PAGE SPEECH AND NOT JUST
PAGE 17 OF 25 PAGES; SO WE CAN ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT LED TO THIS EXCERPT
YOU POSTED.

I was only 7 years old then and saw some of the atrocities the Igbo's did,
especially loading our WOMEN INTO THE ARMY VAN AND DRIVING OFF WITH THEM.

I also witnessed what happened when the Federal troupe came in and some of
the events that took place. YES, That was a second INDEPENDENCE FOR THE EDO
PEOPLE. I still remember the crowd in the streets of Benin chanting "HAUSA
DON COME OH!, IGBO RUN AWAY" Our people were free of the Igbo's at last.

Those days are behind us now, Yes Nowa wrote a book on it and he is free to
air his view and it is therapeutic to do just that. But LIFE GOES ON.

I hope you are not attempting to justify that horrible period.

PLEASE, do not misunderstand what I am saying here. I have 3 Igbo family
living at my mothers house as tenants, one of which has lived there since
1977 and is more like her first Son. I do not dislike any Igbo person. We
are all human. This is a very sensitive subject which brings back a lot of
flash back. Be very careful how you handle this.
LET'S BE REAL WHEN DISCUSSING HISTORICAL ISSUES LIKE THIS.

Awaiting your response.
IT IS ONLY FAIR.

Tinai,

You may be 7 years old then, but I am sure you are now grown up. Even as a 7
year old Edo, I think judging from your people's history and their natural
inclinations for the flesh you can still understand what I mean. No, the
Biafrans did not carry any Edo woman into any van. As natural-born
prostitutes, those Edo women were driven by their natural inclinations to
jump into those trucks on their own. Many even beeged to be privileged. For
you as an Edo woman, I know you understand and can pretty much see yourself
recognizinhg what I mean.

On the contrary, and as you have also acknowledged, when the federal troops
arrived in Benin and Asaba, the Edos joined them in pillaging and raping
hundreds of Igbo women, many as old as 5 years. When the federal troops
entered the rest of Igboland, and even at the end of the war, the
Hausa-Fulani soldiers (many of them so dirty and eating "gworo") would raid
many Igbo commpounds and snatch young girls from their parents. Many times
they took wives away from their husbands, and if the husband protested, he
will be shot on the spot. Tinai, you were 7 years old then, but this is what
the Igbos and Biafrans suffered both during and after the war. The Edos
participated in the murder and rape of many Igbo women. Even as a 7 year Edo
girl then, I still don't think I need to explain all this to you. They
should have come to you naturally.
Peace.
Umeam.

Umeam the Exeter:

People like you should be taken by the Igbos and sent to Benghazi, because
you make a caricature of the Igbo cause, and hurt it badly! When some of
you turn to abuse like this, one gets the impression that you hope that in
Nigeria the Igbos will become so obnoxious that the rest of Nigeria will
just BEG you to leave so as to form their New Biafra.

It won't happen. In fact, it will make more people pull their punches and
dare you. Last time you took a step not to be part of Nigeria, you were
pulled back - after most unfortunately 1 million people died!

Now you have three options:

1. Learn to live in the country peacefully, and work with those like Nowa,
myself and others who want to make it a great country. It will be hard,
but it is doable.

2. Keep quiet and build your strength until you can leave forcefully,
unlike the last time when you were defeated. All this "gra-gra" won't
work. Or

3. Use the democratic process to leave.

The noise most of you make make it virtually IMPOSSIBLE to fulfill your
aim. All this stupid "superior race" stuff and abusing people behind fake
handles won't wash.

That is what some of us keep telling you, and you call us anti-Igbo and
Igbo-phobes. You cannot leave our country just by asking for it, and if
you do leave under certain circumstances, you would be surrounded by
implacable enemies.

And you are not Israel.

I am sure I was able to tell the difference between women who are begging
for sex and women being whooped with bulala by the soldiers and forced into
the van's. I believe that would be the same reason they felt like the
raping of you female if it actually took place was equally justified.

As for you calling the Edo women naturally born prostitutes, Ugbague Street
(the street turned into a prostitution arena) was completely occupied by
Igbo women as prostitutes in Benin. While Prostitution was an abomination
in our BELOVED EDO STATE. yes i WOULD AGREE THAT RECENTLY, SOME EDO WOMEN
ALONG WITH SOME IGBOS, AND OTHER TRIBES FELT WERE ENTICED BY QUICK MONEY
MAKING PROCESS, BUT NOT UNTIL THEY HAVE LEARNED FROM YOUR WOMEN AT UGBAGUE
STREET.

My dear, do not attempt to tell me this is not true either because I saw
them everyday on my way to and from school.

Your women have been and are still the experts, I guess the other tribes
were following the Igbo leading prostitution rings.

Exeter, Umeam or whatever you are,

As much as one would want to sympathize with the Igbos people
over the human calamity of the unfortunate civil war and the
many lives that were lost needlessly, recognition must also be
given to the fact that the same degree of atrocious acts were
perpetrated on the Edos and the other Midwesterners by the
Biafran soldiers.

It is not surprising that people like you would always come out
from their obscurity, on occasions, to seek undeserved attention
by flaunting rubbish larded with ethnic favor. People like you
are always quick, like the flash of the lightening, to point out
what was done to the Igbos during the war, but they always
deliberately shut yourself out of the murdering truth that Igbo
people, even before the war started, committed ineffable
atrocities and several dastardly murders in the then Midwest.
The truth is there about the dark days of the Biafran occupation
of the Midwest, and that is exactly what our Honorable Nowa told
to those who want to know the truth with passionate exactitude.

Exeter,

You are neither  interested in the truth nor  the speech.   Rather,  you've  been stalking  the opportunity to vent your hatred of  the edos because of your past.   Calling edo women "natural -born prostitute" is like a kettle calling pot black.
Those who live in a glass house should not throw stones.
