At the risk of revealing complete ignorance, isn't the cookie/biscuit known as
a "gingersnap" in North America a reasonable approximation of a gingernut?

Never tasted them but they surely must taste better than marmite and
I do like ginger pickle, Japanese style. BTW, how do gingernuts taste
(and do be descriptive) ?

I have found nothing that has the same taste or "snap" of a NZ gingernut
in the stores in Eastern Canada.
If something exists in Canada which is like a gingersnap, please annouce
it on the group so I, and people like myself can make up for lost time!!!

I've found nothng which quite matches GRIFFENS gingernuts within NZ.
Other brands are a very pale imitation and tend to be *soft*
(The ultimate gingernut crime!)

Years ago (when I was a carnivore) I made a roast meat dish for my 21st
b'day, it was a german orginated recipe 'Chauterbrad', it involved blending
a packet of gingernuts in a blender, using the crumbs for the rich gravy in
which the marinating of the meat for 48 hours in red wine and other marinate
ingredients was added.

Fine, no more processed foods but you can't stop me mentioning Christmas Pud (you know the one with 1kg of pure lard), peanut brownies and fruit cake all the way Nana made them. You tell an American about fruit cake and they think of a brick-like substance and althought Nana's fruit wasn't always completely distributed through the cakes (it had a tendancy to sink) they were in a class of their own.
