I have a few observations from when I was at N.P from '81 till '89-the
real bang bang era. I have found Darjeeling Nepalese to differ from
those of Nepal itself in a few subtle ways. I feel the different sects
of nepalese are more thoroughly integrated in Darj than obviously in the
supposedly caste-plays-an-important-part-in-our-lives mother country of
Nepal. The language differs a bit too thru the carefree ways darj people
have toyed with the language not to mention by murdering english words
and adding them to everyday Nepali, my point being they have a very
modern outlook, if you can call it that. Anyway, I'm digressing,I think
Nepal still considers people from darjeeling their brothers but I am not
sure if that works both ways. Anyway, the duars has a significant nepali
population and if the rumours are true Nepal would be happy to have a
"greater Nepal" stretching all the way in the himalayas till it runs a
full circle.;-)
And to the last point made by Michael; as to what kings think I would
say with their ego (a side effect from being in a such a high position)
would make them think that yes, darjeeling was occupied Nepal. And by
the way, the other major town of Kalimpong is on loan from and still
belonging to Bhutan and not Nepal.
