On SIM swapping
A couple of weeks back, I took a boat ride to a nearby Indonesian island for a
short day trip. On the way there, I noticed more than one passenger swapping out
the SIM card on their mobile phones for another one kept in the wallet. That
makes perfect sense for those who straddle between two countries for work. You
get one operator contract at home and another with a local operator in the other
country so you don't incur roaming charges.
Now, switching SIM cards can be tricky sometimes. If I'm doing it outdoors,
here's usually how it goes: Remove SIM card in current phone, put SIM card
between lips so you don't lose it, remove battery cover on second phone, insert
SIM card, turn on new phone. Those are just the main steps. What I haven't
listed out are problems like not having enough hands to handle all that gear
(especially when the batteries are removed), the risk of swallowing and choking
on the SIM card, and the possibility of a mugger coming forward to relieve me of
whatever new, unreleased phone I'm trying out. Imagine, I do this outside of the
office only occasionally, but those who travel overseas to work have to swap
their SIM card out every single day if they do not want to use two mobile
phones.
So, we are thankful for mobile phones with two SIM card slots. Most existing
models (like the Samsung SGH-D880)[http://asia.cnet.com/] aren't that hot on
connectivity features, but that looks like it's about to change. Singapore-based
company Verzio recently launched the Duplii, a device which it claims to be the
first 3G dual-SIM phone. So far, it's available only in the Philippines, but
Verzio says it's in talks with distributors in other countries as well.
