The Big Picture: Will Pas want to ban football next?

Nov 23: WITH Pas intent on wanting to introduce their version of the
laws on hudud, and now, their vision of an Islamic state in Malaysia,
one begins to wonder: whatever next?
Have football banned, like the Taliban did in Afghanistan? It is not as
far-fetched as it sounds.
Those shorts, showing hairy legs they're too much of a turn-on. You see,
we're beasts who cannot control ourselves.
Indeed, the more we are treated like beasts, the more we behave like one.
Just look at the incidence of beastliness in acts of incest and rape in
societies, not least in certain Pascontrolled parts of Malaysia, which
repress normal human intercourse.
If it took Pas just 53 flimsy pages, replete with supporting Quranic
references, at least in the first half of that political party's
pamphlet, to come up with something as profound as the foundations of an
Islamic state, I suppose a couple of pages or a simple edict will do to
ban football altogether.
Apart from those hairy legs, and because smooth, shapely ones are
definitely not on, there will be an allusion to the outrageous behaviour
of football players piling one on top of another, pinning down the
scorer of the celebratory goal.
Or of the scorer running to the corner flag immediately upon scoring,
like Manchester United's Diego Forlan usually does (when he scores, that
is), and then yanking his jersey off, thereby exposing his (dear me!)
bare torso, or even just exposing his sleeveless singlet, in the manner
Arsenal's more protected Thierry Henry has been seen to do after scoring
(which he usually does).
Ugh! How disgusting and intolerable. Therefore, ban. It is all no good.
Rather like so many Western bigots these days condemn all of Islam for
the acts of a few fanatical or suicidal Muslim bombers.
Or, like judging the fullness and quality of Islam, by the propositions
and antics of Pas.
How About Rugby Then?
HEAVEN forbid. A definite no no. All that beefy entanglement and
stooping about in the scrum, where anything could be happening not
supported by good religious practice.
Did you know that the dictator Joseph Stalin once contemplated banning
rugby in the Soviet Union? You see, he thought when the players scrummed
down, they could be plotting against the State.
How extremist political ideologies converge in the climate of fear and
suspicion they themselves create! How wild their imagination is,
especially in matters they know little about.
Anyone who has ever played rugby will tell you there's hardly time for
anything else in the scrum as jerseys are torn and ears are bitten, and
worse, as scores are settled in the shove for the ball.
This is the trouble with people like Pas. Their wild imagination,
thinking the worst, in matters they know little about. They really have
not done much, or played much, in real life, but yet want to sit in
judgment of what it's all about.
They want to be the self-appointed khalifah, by liberally throwing
around several surah of general applicability and applying them to
specific political, not really religious, objectives.
But They Impress
AN ex-civil servant I spoke to reckons six to seven per cent of civil
servants are sympathetic towards Pas.
When I asked him why, he said people are disenchanted with the way some
Umno leaders throw their weight around, especially at State and
divisional levels.
If true, this is something Umno has to sort out.
But when I asked him about the serious threat of what Pas proposes to
do, just documented by their tract Negara Islam, it was quite clear that
he hadn't read it.
All he could say was, at least Pas had come out with something. My, my,
how blind one can be, either with rage at Umno, or with being impressed
by Pas whatever they do or threaten to do.
Whereas it is Umno that has actually done things to make it possible for
Islam to thrive in our country.
No other country in the world has established similar conditions and
institutions for the practice of the Islamic faith and principles.
Which is what Umno has been introducing as a matter of committed Islamic
policy, without undermining the nature of multi-ethnic and
multi-religious Malaysia.
In the process, the country has become strong, and the Islam and Muslims
within it.
If the Muslims are weak, and they certainly will become weak under Pas,
what Islam can they practise when they are subjugated? What Umno must do
is to document what it has done for the betterment of Islam, specific,
solid stuff which is real.
There must be an orderliness and cogency in the presentation which I
have not seen done in a consistent fashion to roll back the Pas
nonsense. Umno cannot allow Pas to make the running, and then respond on
issues Pas defines.
Umno must take the battle to Pas, show up their empty and dangerous talk
and most importantly clearly show what Umno has actually done.
Malaysia Is Multi-racial
UMNO must also come out very clearly and categorically that Malaysia is
a multi-racial country and will always be one.
There is freedom of religion and the freedom for all men and women to
excel in our society. We do not exclude one half because of their gender
and 40 per cent because of their race or religion.
We have a constitution which embraces Islamic and universal principles,
allowing good to be practised for the betterment of all our citizens.
This is the Malaysian constitution. And it stays, because it works, with
justice.
We cannot have Pas undermining the future of Malaysia. Countries that
have gone down that path have destroyed their societies and are
struggling to find their way back.
We don't want to go down that path. And yes, we allow healthy,
competitive sports to be played.

I can already see some malay boys wearing tight cycle pants up to their
knees below their shorts to cover their aurat while playing football.
