The mufti is falling more into sectarian games. He is criticising the
head of a University for voicing opposition to the Syrian occupation, what
else would this traitor want to tell Lebanese to follow?
His motives are questionable.

Mufti slams USJ head for anti-Syrian remarks

The head of Universite Saint Joseph, Father Selim Abou, came under
harsh criticism by the mufti of Tripoli on Friday over recent
anti-government remarks calling for a Syrian withdrawal.
Speaking at a social function in Tripoli, Sheikh Taha Sabounji said
Abou had "abandoned" his role as an ideological theorist, academic and
national religious figure to carry a "bag full of sectarian poison" and
"raise a weapon aimed at national destruction."
Sabounji accused Abou of being "arrogant toward Islam and Muslims" and
criticizing Islamic and Arab history as well as Lebanon's army and leaders.
The cleric said that Abou was undermining the country's political and
social stability and added that while Abou was predicting doom and gloom,
"mobilizing students and provoking their anger and chaos," he was turning a
blind eye to Israeli crimes against the Palestinians.

You see Mark, not only Muslim Sheikhs use their influence to politicize
their followers but Christian Fathers do it as well ! And this is totally
understandable, in fact it is the aim of every religion to motivate people
against injustice and oppression. Nobody blames Father Abou for wanting
freedom and independence, but he is certainly at fault for thinking that
Lebanon's freedom & stability could be achieved by driving Syria out of
Lebanon AT THIS STAGE of the conflict with the Zionist enemy.

and why would I tolerate an Arab dictatorship? I don't even tolerate a
Lebanese dictatorship (and nor should do any free citizen).
anyone not Lebanese is foreign, and there are more than 35000 syrian troops

because syria is influencing each and every decision taken by Lebanon,

Besides, what can one expect from a religious integrist that is

I prefer Syria because the current Syrian political position in Lebanon is
in support of a Lebanese national unity. A strong Lebanon benefits the
Lebanese and Syrians alike, while a weak, divided and war torn Lebanon
brings misery to both Lebanese/Syrian PEOPLE and sets the stage (like it or
not) for an "Israeli" invasion/occupation, directly or indirectly.

Don't you dare talk to me about national unity.
Does what the syrian-backed mufti say contribute to unity? or the flyers
distributed in beirut last year asking the MUSLIMS (not the supporters of
syria) to get on the street with knives and sticks to beat any CHRISTIAN who
asks for independence... and the security forces stand just watching these
while beating and jailing (helped by syrian mukhabarat) others (among whom
are women) who protest peacefully near the justice court?
While Selim Abou and Kornet Chehwan give solutions to reduce the huge burden
that Lebanon (not only the Christians but all Lebanese equally) is currently
carrying, syrian-backed politicians and demonstrations do everything to tear
Lebanon apart.

The Muslim Sheik does not condemn the Syrian occupation, further he thinks
that Syria is right in its security presence in Lebanon, this is just more
sectarian backplay. This guy is outmoded and ridiculous for not calling for
the apparent--Lebanon's sovereignity and independence.

Only a free country can really speak with a full clear and loud voice
regarding the Israeli acts of agression, if you think Democratic reforms are
going to weaken Lebanon then by that logioc dictatorship is a good thing.
If anything a free Lebanon can be a full partner in peace, a full partner
for the cause of the displaced Palestinians, and an advocate of a just
settlement. Right now all of Lebanon's foreign policy is merely dictated by
Syria, all Lebanese judicial, ecexutive and legislative decisions are also
mere dictates from Syria.

I don't prefer either. I prefer a free Lebanon, and there is no reason
other than the Assad dictatorships greed for power, money, and territorial
gains that it wishes to continue its occupation of Lebanon. A free Lebanon
is an economically prosperous Lebanon, a potential partner in peace and
solidarity and a gaurantee of human and civil rights. What is the status of
a Lebanon where the press is censored, where voting is a joke, where all
decisions must be cleared if not propagated from Syrian intelligence
officials? Lebanon is a sattelite state, and I do not find that a good
alternative to an independent Lebanon. There is no weakness in calling for
a democratic Lebanon, because in democracy there is strength in freedom--the
sheik is a sectarian power baiter in that he can not see the obvious--he is
a traitor.

You are incorrect, Syria lives off the internal divisions within Lebanese
society, it manages to dominate by offering incentives/and punishments to
Muslim politicans to ignore and agree with the occupation of Lebanon. Syria
is only concerned with Lebanon in as far as it can syphon off money from
several sectors of Lebanon's free trade economy. Further the "old guard" of
the Baath party has always believed that Lebanon's relative freedom is an
area of instability since every coup in Syria can trace its dissident roots
in Lebanon as a haven for exile. Syria consistently censors the press in
Lebanon, it denies free and fair trials, it controls the now rubber stamp
parliament in Beirut, and has a puppet president. Add this to security and
intelligence forces and 35k Syrian troops stationed in Lebanon, along with
constant intimidation and denial of liberties to those who criticise
Syria=OCCUPATION!
If you cant see that, then you are blind.

I'm not sure I understand the joke or the political statement you are trying
to make. If you are serious then it should only be taken as a joke, because
Lebanon should be a free country, and if you call yourself a Lebanese person
you are obligated to believe in a free Lebanon, otherwise pack your bags and
sew your mouth shut and nod your head as you live in Damascus. Also, while
enjoying your stay in Damascus you may be incliuned to throw stones at
Syrian parliamentarians that are being tortured at present for calling for
democratic reforms--after all you state that you prefer the Syrian
dictatorship. I for one prefer a free country.

I'll agree with most of what you say, but I think the essential point I am
making is that Lebanon needs to be a free country. A sheik that thinks it
is his duty to go around telling people not to call for an independent
Lebanon is doing no good at all to help Lebanon. There are many steps to
peacefully calling for the Syrian withdrawl, I believe it will take a cross
sectarian unity in which all the major za'uma will get together and call for
a removal of the Syrian presense. I am not naive, I understand that these
same leaders all profit from the Syrian occupation of Lebanon, it is then
the duty of all intelligent Lebanese people to put our case to the world
forums and the American policy makers.
Perhaps this mufti enjoys the censorship and lack of freedom that Syria is
throwing at Lebanon's feet? Im not sure.
There are thousands of Syrian troops occupying Lebanon, the Parliament is a
rubber stamp body, The legislative executive and judicial branches are all
rubber stamps of policies that emanate from Damascus.
As far as the "same dreams," I have no doubt that the vast majority of
Syrians aspire for a prosperous Syria that is free--however there is no
political culture on which to build any democratic reforms in Syria.
Lebanon is in quite a very different position, as we have always enjoyed
some participatory and parliamentary forms of democracy before the civil
war. Lebanon also has a free market economy and history, Syria has a long
way to go and the "reforms" that Assad has pushed through are all but a
joke. I am not waiting for Syria to modernize (though for the Syrians sake
I hope it will) however I am calling for Lebanon to regain its status as a
regional haven of freedom.
Lebanon, with its high exposue to European and Western values, language and
culture has the ability to promote itself as a location for businesses to
come to---so long as the Syrian occupation ends, and the border with the
Israelis is finally settled in the course of a regional peace deal.

Mustafa, tell him to direct this question to his Zionist Clan of Syriac Holy
Warriors who have been kissing Syrian Ass (as well as Jewish Ass) for the
past 3 years on SCL. They like Syria and its regime just fine. They have
absolutely no problem with Syria at all, if it serves their purposes. In
fact, they have no problem telling the whole world that they are more than
ready and willing to deal with the devil, and they have, if it serves their
purposes. It is their leaders, in the first place who kissed Hafez Assad's
ass to intervene on their behalf in Lebanon. Then it is was their leaders
who asked the Israelis to intervene on their behalf. It was then their
Bashir Gemayel (war lord in life, God in death) who was the 1st appointed
puppet president of Lebanon, followed by his brother Amine Gemayel. They are
very good at starting things, rotten at finishing them.

The last thing on these people's mind is the welfare of Lebanon.

The Zionist Clan of Syriac Holy Warriors, their pupils, and cronies can
never re-write history to deny that it was the Leaders of the Maronite
polity of the day, including all of what was known at the time as the Right
Wing or Christian Militias, kissed Syrian ass to intervene ion their behalf
in Lebanon. Later, the same politicians kissed Jewish ass to intervene on
their behalf in Lebanon. Today, people like Karim Pakradouni (head of the
Kataeb party), Eli Hobeika (former security chief of the Lebanese Forces) -
lately killed by Sharon, Amin Gemayel (son of founder of the Kataeb's party
and brother of Bashire Gemayel), Suleiman Franjiyeh (of the Marada), just to
name a few are competing in the service of the regime in Syria but are
probably just as ready and willing to serve the Jewish State.

The 1st puppet president installed in Lebanon was Bashir Gemayel (head of
the military wing of the Kataeb's party) installed by Israel immediately
after its invasion of Lebanon. Bshir was crown puppet king on the heap of
the corpses of some 15,000 Lebanese victims of the Israeli invasion. His
colleagues who were kissing Jewish ass yesterday, are kissing Syrian ass
today.

If you are not aware of the Jewish State marionettes playing crusader
lackies one more time in their "1400 year history of resistance against Arab
imperialists", who would be clueless. As for boring, I'm sure you won't find
me as interesting as watching blood spilled by the Jewish State over a six

Rumble rumble and a bottle of rum. Like a said, when Jerusalem was sacked by
the Crusaders, their allies in the region (those who gave them 50,000 stout
archers) rejoyced as well. There is no change in the historic picture that I
can see. But from a buch who hold such believes as "the slaughter of people
in Sabra and Shatila (and the Druze villages in the Shouf too, aparently)
was a religious duty to avenge the killings of the victims of Damour" one
can expect a lot more.

This is the ridiculous hateful side of opposition to Syrian occupation of
Lebanon. You seem to hate and despise Palestinians and Syrians as a people,
and you enjoy the sufferings of the Palestinians. I am ardently pro
Lebanon, and I support Lebanon's right to sovereignity and freedom, yet I
also realize the importance to a peace accord so that the Palestinians may
find justice. I listen and hear idiots call the Syrian occupation of
Lebanon "preferable" to the Israeli one, and people like you on the other
side who delight in the sufferings of the Palestinian people.
I for one do not see the two as oppositional--Lebanon should be a FREE
COUNTRY, and the issue of the Palestinians is quite easy--they should earn
through negotiations a free country with defined borders and the right to
return to that country. No Palestinians should ever be allowed to settle in
Lebanon, after all notonly would it rock the sectarian balance in Lebanon
but it would further undermine the rights of the Palestinians to return to
their homeland.
I for one am hoping for peace, and for a free Lebanon, neither one is
opposed to the other, and all you are doing is giving opposition to Syrian
tutelage a bad name.

They all turned Lebanon into a slum, but for syria, that wasn't enough; it
wanted to make sure that Lebanon remains a slum forever:
It has thrown its poison all over Lebanon by trying to make muslims believe
that they are its allies (that reminds me of someone...), and for the sake
of Islam shall fight the free lebanese. In addition to that, it has set up a
puppet president, and mostly-puppet parliament and council of ministers.

While I think you have a legitimate right and obligation to stand up to the
occupation of Lebanon, I disagree that *only* Syria turned Lebanon into a
slum. The factionalism among different Lebanese parties (Christian groups
included) aided to the weakness of Lebanese society. Muslims also are to
balme for their complicity, but Iranians, Israelis, Syrians and Americans
all stuck their noses in as well....Im not fond of any occupying force in
Lebanon. The sectarian, hateful, and self rightous attitude is what got
Lebanon in this place and allowed for the Assad clan to plunder and rape

Not only are your comments insensitive to the suffering that the
Palestinians are undergoing as a people, but you are incorrect in your
assesment of Israel being the "lesser evil." I dont prefer Israeli
occupation over Syrian occupation, I prefer a Free Lebanon. I do care about
the peace status in Israel because it affects regional stability and the
final status of the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, who should be
repatriated to a Palestinian state. I dont want to get into civil war
debates about who was "worse" and who was "better," it was a messy period
in lebanese history where people were betraying each other and allowing
foreign forces ranging from teh Syrians, the Iranians and the Israelis to
intervene and aid the destruction of Lebanon. A final status settlement
between the Palestinians and the Israelis is good for America, good for the
region, good for Palestinians and Israelis.....and as for Syria, it is
occupied by a dictatorial regime. Your sectarian calls for freedom will
fall on deaf ears, its not until the Lebanese as a group can present a real
call for freedom that resonates in the halls of Washington and the world as
a unifying force, not another sectarian rant regarding the civil war.

Perhaps you should say "read my soundbytes," because you are uttering
nonsense. Your personal hatred of Syrian*s* and Palestinian*s* is your own

My problem is that you sing the same old sectarian tune with your opposition
to Syria. I dont want Syrian occupation of Lebanon, not because Syrians are
inherently bad, or Syrians are culturally inferior, or they are "assholes"
as you say. I merely want Lebanon to be an independent peaceful country...I
hope the Syrians will have reforms, and I hope the Palestinians will find a
just peace with the Israelis. You bet a lot on your own personal
preconceptions and biases....I merely want a free Lebanon, and when you

How can it be Sectarian? When I call for the removal of Syrian Forces? Or
show impassion for the Palestinians, because I have not forgotten their
bloody past in Lebanon.

ex: Arafat spoke of Israeli Snipers shooting at his people, I wish I ad a
way to call him up, and remind him of the Snipers in Karantina shooting

Example: You are talking in civil war mumbo jumbo. I think towards the
future, you can not discount that *all parties* in the civil war were
manipulating one another, and none were really looking out for the best
interest of Lebanon or for Unity. I dont care to debate the nuances of the
civil war, who was more guilty: the Iranians, the Syrians, Israelis, etc etc
etc....the point of contention that I have is for the *unity* of Lebanon. I
dont have ill will towards anyone: Syrians or Palestinians, I simply wish
that Lebanon should excercize sovereignity over its own area.
I do not care to hear anymore jibberish about civil war era matters that are
now in the past, the future is what Lebanon needs to be built on: unity and
freedom and independence. You rattle on like a broken record about your
hatred for Palestinians and Syrians, and I am telling you that you are being

suffer every day at the hands of the corrupt Assad regime. I think that

Your lack of logic is really starting to grate on me. As a child of
emigrants, I am not in exactly a situation where buying goods from Syria is
an issue. The part of the equation that you continually forget is that the
Syrian people are themselves hostage to the dictatorial leadership in charge
of their country basically since the assumption of the Baath party in 1963.
Syrian members of parliament themselves have been jailed and are being
tortured for calling for more freedoms within Syria--even minor basic
freedoms like an end to emergency laws that govern Syria.
My point is that every day Syrians are hostage to their government, and have
no say in the policies that are made by their leaders. The only way that
this will change is internally, and with outside support for change. Syria
needs to start from the ground up and build a civil society, while I am not
an optimist there is a possibility that some groundwork could be laid within
the next 25 years that would build *some* civil institutions--though I am
doubtful.
A free Lebanon is the most economically prosperous Lebanon, as investors are
more comfortable with a free Lebanon. I believe that Lebanon has the
cultural capital, diversity and resources to be an important regional
country again. The duty of Lebanese in the diaspora is to lobby powers like
the US to include a full evacuation from Lebanon and a disarming of
Hizbollah in the final peace status agreements with Israel and Syria. That
is the only real way that I see the Syrians leaving Lebanon--by being bribed
at the peace table.

advantage of the Occupation. And Many Syrians consider Lebanon part of
Syria that must be returned to them. I meet few Syrians that do not favor
the Status quo in Lebanon.

I think we already discussed how when you use "personal experiences" to
justify policy making it makes your position look weak. I know many Syrians
that advocate democratic reform in Syria, and I know many Syrians that
detest the occupation of Lebanon. You employ the use of your own
experiences without hard facts, and that my friend makes your positions
flimsy.
I believe that most people, especially those languishing under dictatorial
rule, aspire for freedom. The Syrian people are suffering under the
dictatorship that has ruled Syria for over 3 decades. Again, you are having
trouble with this logic--Lebanon+Freedom does not = hatred of anyone. A
free Lebanon is best for everyone in the region, and for that matter a free
Syria and a just peace between the Israelis and Palestinians is best for
everyone in the region.
You justify your views by hating Syrians, and Palestinians but I justify
mine by a love of a free Lebanon, all else is not only inconsequential but
in your case xenophobic.

I think you should listen to some Syrian intellectuals in exile, reasoned

I think we are having a problem using reasoned discourse. Perhaps it will
help if I try to help you with this formula:

Syrian people=Dominated by Dictatorship
Dictatorship in Syria is Opressing Lebanon

Your provincial attitude towards "loading docks," and your "house in
Achrafieh" or something and your own personal hatred of Syrians and
Palestinians is just plain silly. What is important in opposition towards
Syrian domination is to realize that Syria is run by a group of theives and
dictators, and that lobbying policy makers in the US to settle the Israeli
Palestinian conflict with a just outcome that will hopefully affect the
status of Lebanon. Your sectarian rantings regarding how much you prefer
Israelis, all the while as Israelis used so many willing Lebanese as mere
Pawns (as did the Syrians and the Iranians). The key to liberation is to
make it a movement that trascends sectarian, local or tribal claims--A free
Lebanon is good for all Lebanese, and is not based on hatred of anyone but
rather for love of Lebanon.

I cant believe that this is even a discussion. Islamic styled art can
easily be paralleled with Byzantine or other forms of Art in Europe that
developed from the Christian faith. An airport lounge really doesnt matter
to me, I am a bit more concerned with the status of human rights, civil

I am nots ure if you are yourself a Christian, however I would like to
remind you that humility is another Christian ideal. Christians are called
by Jesus to be humble, to be chaste, honest, and to value human life. There
are hypocrites all around us, but instead of judging people a real Christian
looks to the spiritual center within his or her own life.
Thats enough theology for now, but I don't take Mm's comments very

objective realities. He chooses to hate all Syrians or to turn a blind eye

as a force to unite Lebanese people--I believe that the Palestinians rightly
deserve justice and their own state, and that it will affect the region as a

So by your conclusion one can assume that an Islamic inspired artistic
format is equivalent to the establishment of an Islamic state? That is
ridiculous, after all Italy is a secular country, yet there are hundreds of
thousands of buildings inspired by Gothic or Byzantine art motifes--which
are from the Christian tradition. The great basillica styled buildings do
not necessarily mean that religion is being used in the format, but that it
may have inspired the use of such motifes. I find nothing wrong with
expressing one more facet of Lebanon's unique cultural and religous makeup.

The civil war was a period where people were all serving non Lebanese
entities in a move to gain power over Lebanon. It was silly, and
ridiculous. Each group had a patron that had its own reasons for
manipulating the Lebanese and playing on their insecurities--Syrians,
Iranians, Palestinians, Americans, Israelis. Personally I think that is an
ugly chapter in Lebanese history and now is the time to build a new Lebanon.
The Palestinian presense in Lebanon hopefully will be resolved in the
framework of a peace accord between the Israelis and Palestinians when the
former get proper leadership. I hope that we can witness the Palestinians
national aspirations for statehood realized and that they can repatriate
back to a Palestinian state of some form. That would be the best solution
for Lebanon and the Palestinians,

If you think Arafat has a religiuos agenda I advise you to inform Hamas and
Islamic Jihad which will surely move against Arafat as soon as he has his
own state. Again, you keep falling back into civil war lexicon, you must
have lived through that period, so you are unable to see anything from a

It may help you to understand the society in which Palestinians live in,
that attributes their situation. What was so much more civilized about the
Lebanese people that butchered the Palestinians in Sabra and Shatila, if you

Part of living in a free society is a basis of diversity, and a respect to
that diversity in the forms of culture, language, religion and even
architecture. In the US we have a variety of styles of architecture than
can lend themselves back to various groups. Lebanon is a religiously
diverse nation, and I do not see anything wrong with architecture that helps
to beautify Lebanon if it lends itself from various styles and periods.
Personally, I am a secular person, and I do not draw any religious meaning
from religous architecture, but I do find it asthetically pleasing.
In regards to your statement, it may be helpful to stop rattling off
soundbytes since they grate on peoples ears. I see no reason to have an
armed force in lebanon--namely Hizbollah. However the Syrians are using
Lebanon as a proxy ground and hizbollah as a proxy military to fight their
proxy war. There is no quick way to unshackle Lebanon from this predicament
but as I have repeatedly told you, it will require negotiations through a
regional peace deal.
Also, don't ask me to shed tears for Israel regarding attacks, after all it
is Israel that is occupying (against international laws, EU directives, UN
resolutions, and even US approval) the west bank and conducting an ethnic
cleansing policy in the form of settlements. I am not sympathetic to
Israel. However, I do realize the need for peace, NO Israelis should suffer
under duress or fear for their safety by any form of terrorism. The same
should apply to Palestinians. These things will all hopefully be hammered
out in a peace treaty with someone with more leadership skills than the war
atrocity minded Sharon or the idiot Arafat.

Mark, Islam is intent on Driving the Israelis into the sea, if not in the
next century, or even in the next Millennium, when they get their chance.
The only thing Keeping Israel is its supreme power. They know it and the
Arabs know it, Israel will never allow a Palestinian state to exist, they
know that it will become just a Launching pad. The Situation is hopeless.

Where did you read about my position against a unified Lebanon? Why is my
hatred toward Palestinian/Syrian Occupiers considered Radical?

Exactly, you are stuck in this civil war mentality. I am from a younger
generation of people that dont really focus on these inconsequential matters
of what sect is more to blame. The answer is clear--unity. The answer is
clear: independence. The answer is clear: sovereignity.
All else is sectarian rattle. You are babbling about Arafat and how you
support the Israelis and that the Palestinians who were butchered in camps
by the Phalange deserved it? I dont think this is going anywhere as you
fail to grab at reason, and you revert to your own personal experiences as a
supplement for logic.

A peace agreement is a possibility. As for Islam as a religion, I believe
that a reformation is necessary, one that would allow people to disagree
with religious authorities etc. I disagree with your view that peace is
impossible, and I revert to what I keep asking you: Israel is illegally
settling land in opposition to the fourth geneva convention. No country on
earth recognizes this as licit action, can you please justify that?
I will make it easy for you,
You cant.
