Inokuma Kanetsugu, chief of the research team of the tomb on May 30 made
public two facts: 1) the Kitora celestial map may be a night sky observed at
North Latitude 39-38, which is the spot around Pyongyang; 2) the image of
Paekho or a white tiger, one of the mural paintings, is almost identical to
that drawn in the Takamatuzuka Tomb built near the Kitora tomb, when it is
reversed.
As these new facts were discovered after analyzing the digitally modified
images of the mural paintings, the Kitora chart was highly appreciated as an
important historical material, which shows a strong influence of Koguryo
culture on the tomb. The discovery also backs the idea that the Kitora mural
belongs to the category of Koguryo's four god wall-painting tumuli.
