Rembrandt Meets Nouril...

Listen to Raphael Nouril, the world-renowned realistic painter, and you'll get
a feeling he's met all his subjects personally. Can that be so? What about his
painting of Rembrandt?

True, world-renowned realistic painter Raphael Nouril never met Rembrandt
(1606-1669), but he dreamt about him. Or, rather Rembrandt paid Nouril a visit
in a dream, which, when you hear it from Nouril's mouth, will make you scratch
your head in wonder if Nouril really dreamt it or if he actually met Rembrandt
in person--somehow!

In the so-called "dream," Nouril asked Rembrandt why he omitted the words of
the first commandment--"I am the Lord"--in his painting of Moses and the Ten
Commandments. Rembrandt told him he didn't think it mattered one way or
another. What Nouril disclosed to Rembrandt about the meaning of the letter
alef in kabbalistic and Hebrew meanings blew the mind of Rembrandt--and
probably will blow your mind, too. Exclaimed Rembrandt: "Now I know why I came
to visit you. I had to meet a real Jewish artist."

And out of this came another incredibly realistic painting-- Rembrandt and
Nouril together--a sight that makes viewing "A Cable to Jewish Life" this week
worth every minute of your time.

"I like reality. It tastes of challah," says Raphael Nouril, the greatest
living "realistic painter" and the once secular Jew who changed his lifestyle
in order to understand the spirituality of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Now why
would he go to all that trouble, becoming an Orthodox Jew, just to do that?
Because each man comes to G-d in his own way, and Nouril discovered not only
his Jewish roots in himself, but also the deepest Jewish roots of every living
thing that could be painted. Out of that also came three of his greatest
paintings, "Portrait of the Rebbe," "The Two Rebbes," and "Chasidim as Art
Critics Viewing the Painting of The Rebbe."

"Once you become more spiritual and sensitive," said Nouril, "it applies to
every thing in your life." In his still lifes, for example, Nouril "becomes
one with nature. In a garden, I see a particular green leaf attached to a
particular pink rose that only G-d Himself shaped. I paint the still life as
G-d allows me to see them, as no camera can even capture." (If you want to see

York City ASAP, through July.)
