No, Z, AIPAC in particular is very different from the Muslim Oil
Lobby. The latter is a lobby or a collection of lobbies for foreign
countries, paid for by those foreign countries, and registered and
regulated as such. It must periodically report its activities to the
responsible agency and also must scrupulously avoid meddling in US
elections, e.g., it commits a crime when it injects money into the
election process or, directly or indirectly, threatens or pays-off
legislators with campaign contributions or in any other fashion.
Yet these are things done by AIPAC and its associated PACs routinely
on behalf of Israel, a country just as foreign as any other and one
whose national interests are just as different from America's as any
other. The result has been the corruption of the decision-making
process in Congress and in the executive too.
Aipac, the Congressional epicenter of the Irael lobby, is a DOMESTIC
organization working exclusively for a foreign country. It consists of
Americans, though some are of dual American/Israeli nationality, and
utilizes American, not Israeli, money. It is notorious, however, for
doing whatever the Israeli government wants. Yet the lobbying law
registration requirements, prohibitions and sanctions are deemed not
to apply to lobbying and electioneering for that particular foreign
country simply because of the domestic source of the money. Thus this
foreign country, Israel, gets both political access and American
election participation rights by proxy, which other countries are
denied. If we are to run our own affairs and do it democratically,
this is obviously not in the American national interest.
I don't know if the legitimacy of this arrangement has been tested in
the federal courts, but if not it should be. The evil addressed,
foreign influence corrupting the generation of American policy, ought
to trump the mere source of the money. I also don't see why Americans,
especially Americans with blatantly obvious conflicts of interest,
should not be forbidden to fund lobbies which are objectively for
foreign countries. Foreign agendas should not be incorporated into
American policy through loopholes such as this, especially not into
American FOREIGN policy which involves matters of war and peace and
vast expenditures of blood, treasure and anguish for the public who
bear these burdens.
