In the UK, there was a proposal to label kosher and halal meat as "not
stunned." The vote was taken and the proposal (very narrowly) defeated
73 to 70.

Actually, my guess would be that it was a group or groups like PETA
that started this UK anti-shechita issue to begin with. PETA and
groups like it tend to be antisemitic and habitually target shechita,
just as they targeted Rubashkin in the USA (as opposed to Tyson or
Armour or Hormel or Smithfield). They know from the outset that entire
populations are not going to become vegetarians. So, while universal
vegetarianism may be their long-range goal, their short-term agenda
more often than not seems to revolve around passing laws against
shechita.
