This one is a little troubling in that I have mixed feelings. It is
great that a painting that was stolen from Jews by the Nazis has been
returned. However, what was a Jew doing with THIS painting of a thorned
Jesus dragging the cross?

Who knows? It's an extremely valuable piece of artwork, 500 years old,
painted by a famous artist. The original purchaser may have been an
assimilated Jew who was thrilled to pieces to own a piece of artwork
(any piece) by this particular artist. Suppose an original DaVinci
suddenly became available for sale on the open market and you could
afford the asking price, wouldn't you want to buy it? And if it so
happened that the painting had a Christian religious theme? Would you
pass up the opportunity to own an original DaVinci? Some Jews would.
Some Jews wouldn't.
Best regards,

I would only add that Marc Chagall, a very Jewish artist, painted some
crucifixes. And if you've ever read Chaim Potok's book "My Name is Asher
Lev" it deals with a Jewish painter who is Orthodox and who shocks his
family and community by painting his father on a crucifix. Potok himself was
observant. The crucifix denotes martyrdom and sacrifice, and not necessarily
of the Christian kind.

I guess if I could make a bunch of money on it, I would buy it.
However, I wouldn't display it in my home.

What about depictions of Greek, Roman, Teuton, etc deities? What about
Hindu or Buddhis art? Would you find those troubling too, ori is it
only cristian themes that trouble you? What about secular pictures
showing frontal nudity? Or depicting sex acts? Would those trouble
you?

You ask: "However, what was a Jew doing with THIS painting of a
thorned Jesus dragging the cross?" My best guess is that he was
investing in an object that he expected would significantly increase
in monetary value over time. It was stolen, and now it has been
returned. And the hoopla over the theft and eventual return can only
further increase the price it will fetch at auction.

Exacty. How ofte do Jews attend concerts or own recordings of Christian
religious music. some of iti is incredibly beautiful music like the Bach
Bmino mass or Handel's Messiah of Beethoven's Missa Solemness or many
other works.

The painter who did the Jesus painting was a high Renaissance
painter who apparently did alot of Catholic works-- see link above.
It is possible that the Jewish person who had this painting received
it as a gift or an investment.

Since this painting was returned, we could sing..."Hello Dali, well
hello Dali, it's so nice to have you back where you
belong...." (sung to the tune of Hello Dolly)

(OK, I know, wrong artist..I am trying to be a bit humorous here)

Or we could try to listen to the Kosher Gospel of Joshua Nelson, an
African American Jew-- Jewish music done gospel style.

I am not troubled at all by a Jewish family owing such a painting.
It's a beautiful painting. A person can own a painting or a
photograph without worshiping the person
shown in it.
