We saw it last night (only 13 people in the cinema)

I thought that it was because the Larry (the film's protagonist) was
supposed to be a descendent of the couple who saw the dybbuk. (nothing
in the movie specifically said so).

Almost a Philip Roth depiction of Jews.

Has the Coen brothers imprint. Philip Roth may have been an inspiration to
them in their youth.
