shut down all emigration from Nazi occupied Europe, it had not been to
change things by much. Most any possibility of escape had already
been erased for all but the most wealthy or influential, since the
September 15, 1935 decrees of the Nuremberg Laws, cutting off any
viable or visible means of doing business, or making any sort of
living in the Reich--for Jewish people.
The decree Hitler issued on that dismal day of late October was being
laughed to scorn for the absurdity it was, in view of the queues that
every day had grown to wrap twice and nearly three times around the
city block at any American or British embassy. And as of the outbreak
of war, September 1, 1939, U.S. immigration quotas for refugees of
German or Eastern European origin (Jews especially) had long been
filled, right up till1952--in case you didn't mind waiting? Well!
There were always those other lines you could get into, ever since
February of 1940, for a train ride to some highly touted "Jewish
Resort" in Poland, in case any were all that anxious to be lining up
for something so hopeful as all that.
The Jews of Poland knew how 'hopeful' it was, even if German and
French Jews had as yet, little or no idea. In Poland the firsthand
accounts of people escaping the ghettos with their stories of the SS
Deaths-Head Einsatzgruppen firing squads and mass graves, had gotten
around even to the extent that, "between 1939 and 1941 nearly 300,000
Polish Jews, almost 10 percent of the Polish Jewish population, fled
German-occupied areas of Poland and crossed into the Soviet zone."

they found to greet them there, as by the tens of thousands, Jews were
promptly loaded into boxcars to be deported to Siberia, central Asia,
and other remote areas in the interior of the Soviet Union.

Jews fortunate to have been living in the Netherlands and Denmark,
given a whole lot more of that luck were able to make the connections
necessary to stow away aboard fishing boats bound for Sweden. In
France, had a Jew the advantage of more than a few Francs in his
pocket, you might be able to bribe your way over the Spanish border to
gain a visa for Portugal from whence passage might be booked, again
given visas for South America or Shanghai.
Such dearly expensive, first class options as these for the majority
of low to middle class Jews of Europe were closed shut tight, and when
the war heated up as of the June '41 invasion of the USSR, with all of
Poland transformed into a war zone, even the prospect of spending a
few years or the rest of your life as a guest of the Russians at their
Jewish Resort in Siberia no longer looked quite so sunny and hopeful,
let alone in the least way possible, as that emigration came to a
crashing halt in 1941, with the advance of Nazi control to the
furthest reaches of the Balkans.
Following upon Death Knell Day, all the Greater Reich had become for
Jews nothing except an annex to Auschwitz, into which there would have
been no gleam of hope at all, save for just one, last, scarce ray that
since 1939 had been beaming from the Black Sea port of Constanza in
Romania, through Hungary to Austria, from its original source of light
in Eretz Israel of Jewish Palestine, come of a beacon of one last hope
and call to life, known as "Aliya Bet."
The Israeli Mossad began its life to do battle against the British
White Paper of 1939 put into place at that time of all times, to
severely limit Jewish immigration to Palestine. In its infancy, this
"Mossad l'Aliya Bet," was specifically what might quite rightly be
called the "Illegal Immigration Service" of Eretz Israel, formed to a
single, albeit two-pronged purpose: 1) to defy the British White
Paper, 2) by rescuing Jewish refugees from the Nazi extermination
machine.
Aliya Bet (Mossad) was headed by Shaul Avigur, founder of
"Shai" (Sherut Yed 'ot) the intelligence service of the Haganah, as
also he was head of counter intelligence, Resh Nun - Rigul Negdi, "and
Ta'as - the clandestine defense industry that later became the Israel
defense industry. He was active in the fight against the British White
Paper of 1939 and then served as head of the illegal immigration
authority, the Mossad l'Aliya Bet, which operated to help Jews escape
from Nazi-occupied Europe. He was also active in organizing
clandestine arms purchases."

Now there are those who hold to the opinion that Jews had no business
emigrating to Palestine at all in the first place, and this just goes
to show how "illegal" the whole thing was right from the beginning,
when Jews started boarding those leaky tramp freighters from ports on
the Black Sea to run the British blockade. Yes, indeed it was totally
ILLEGAL for a poor, doomed European Jew from 1939 onward to save his
own life. It had become a settled matter of international law that it
was now illegal for a Jew of Europe to live.
For the average European middle and working class Jew, let alone all
bourgeois Jews who'd had everything the Nazis could lay hands on
confiscated, for this majority of Jews who were being told by the rest
of the world to lay down and die in the gas, there were a few Zionists
among them saying right back to all the world, "Kiss My Sweet Jewish
Tuchas! You go lie in the gas. I will live!"
Yes. And what's more, "If those Arabs of Palestine don't like it?
Well, let me tell you something: ain't that just too bad that my need
to stay alive makes him feel all invaded and everything? I don't care.
Read my lips! You don't like it? You shut up. And you stay shut up. My
life matters to me. It matters not to you. So, you got nothing to say
about it, because nobody's chasing your stingy Arab buns around with
a Nazi Gas Van. So you just shut up, move over and make room. Oh no?
Then it's you who will be in the soup, Baby. You just find out. No.
This is the land of MY ancient fathers and mothers, and since you
don't like it, this is the day for you to change your mind, or . . .
It would have been nice, had the Arabs been courteous about the whole
thing. Had they so done, there would have been room enough for all, in
peace and prosperity. But they had no heart for any but their own.
Their miserly, selfish, uncharitable, bigoted way of behaving from day
one, with their constant outrages of bloody depredations? It only
forced Israel's hand to declare Eretz Israel in Palestine a state
independent of the Arabs in the land--an absolutely necessary act of
survival is Israel, and make no mistake about it.
For those who say there is no connection between Israel with its
18,000 blockade running, Palestine bound, Black Sea Jews--and the
Holocaust? Nothing on earth could be a greater falsification of
History. Obviously. There is no more parsing a distinction between
Jews and Israelis, than between Jews and the Holocaust, the Holocaust
and Israel. Those were 18,000 fighting mad, proud to be alive, Jews,
baby. Jews who would survive AT ALL COSTS, as any fully human person
with a heart, will do.
People on this earth do what they must to survive. Nothing less can be
expected of anyone. To say otherwise is the lowest moral depravity
known to man. And it doesn't matter what they say, because those who
know, do know it is not only a right to survive but it IS right to
survive; always right to survive and always wrong to stand in the way
of another man's survival. Those who do not know that will very sadly
learn the hard way how wrong that is. And if they will wrongly fight,
wrongly supposing that they save their land from a man who would come
seeking sanctuary there--do you know what? They have, by that,
violated any privilege they ever thought was theirs to call it "their
land."
It is no mere matter of logic, nor of morality, let alone of
scriptural teaching, though it may be all those things, only
secondarily. But first it is a law; the law of survival. You deny any
man the sanctuary that will save his life, suddenly he has the right
by virtue of saving his life to take what you will not give. For it is
not your life he is after, but only a place to stand free of harm. He
will demand that place. It is right for him so to do, it is his right
so to do. Your claim to the land upon which you stand is lesser than
the claim the other man has to the life in which he stands. You don't
make land the greater value over life. You don't do that, and remain
in the right. Do it, and what have you done to the value of your own
life, let alone to any claim on a space of the earth to sustain it?
The moment you devalue another life, you devalue all life, most
especially your own, and all things pertaining to it.

Swell to hear from you again, Dvora, and I'm sorry it's taken so long
to reply! After about the third day, I must have figured well, nobody
likes me, everybody hates me, guess I'll go eat -- Chateau Lafite
Rothschild? (get a vintage old enough and you probably could--with a
fork!)
So that was the sixth day when you posted this, and I would hardly
have known but for this friendly little feature they have in Google
Groups that keeps a record of activity on the topics you've started or
posted to, something I rarely bother to check, but for some reason
wound up doing so, today. And here it is fully 12 days after your
post!!
