Reading wiki about the British capture of Israel from the Turks in
WWI, I came across this:

"The force initially consisted mostly of British and Egyptian troops,
but most of these were sent to the Western Front in early 1918 to help
repel Germany's Spring Offensive. In the meantime, new troops were
then dispatched from India, Australia, and New Zealand, and Anzacs in
particular made up a large portion of the army. Though it was feared
that mostly Muslim Indian troops might desert and join Ottoman Empire
forces in the region (who had declared a jihad against the Allies
early in the war), this fear proved unfounded, as the Indians fought
valiantly on the front lines of most of the army's major engagements."

We not only had Indians from India in the British forces but Native
Americanm Indians from Canada too. Heavily involved in the fighting on
the western front in france, as well as on the ottoman front. & in
North Africa in ww2. though we in the UK have shamefully forgotton
this. & allegedly the Indian government descriminates against those
pensioners who fought against the Japanese in the east as british
collaborators now. As for a muslim rebellion or jihad I think were
forgetting, that India is Hindu, Sikh, Bhuddist, Moslem (& G-d knows
what else, no offense intended) the arab rebellion against the Turks
that led to our land as part of the wider ME being promised (by the
British gov not G-d) twice.

The point is that the Brits had already demonstrated how they
would deal with mutinous Muslims in the ranks during the Sepoy
Mutiny. Hence, there was little chance that Empire troops would
mutiny during WW-1.

I think you'll find that 20-21 was after ww1,
but I see your point.
British jews were unwilling to fight on the same side as Tsarist
Russia until they were allowed to fight as jewish units mainly in the
ME
God, guns and Israel : Britain, the First World War and the Jews in
the Holy Land / Jill Hamilton.

Lee, why would the Jews in Eretz Israel volunteer to fight for
Britain when they were Turkish subjects at that time? Are you
writing that Jews in the UK refused to fight when conscripted?

There was no conscription in the UK WW1 until 1917, & I'm talking
about the UK jews, who had only just emigrated from Russia & the
pogroms.

If that's the case, then those Jews were not yet UK citizens.
Jews have been living openly in the UK since Cromwell. Are you
maintaining that UK Jews who were already citizens refused to serve?

Jews started to arrive in the uk in the late 19th century, as did my
great grandparents WW1 didnt start until 1914. I dont know & dont
really care, in this instance about the small minority of jews
tolerated before the influx from Russia. Any more questions ? Go &
read the book I listed earlier its very informative

You make a general, derogatory statement that UK Jews refused to
fight, post inaccurate history about Jews in the UK that almost
every UK Jew (except you) would immediately recognize as
incorrect, and then when asked to be specific, you write "Go &
read the book." You are a waste of time.

of course I've heard of the jewish Underground. In fact I think the
Balfour declaration & Israel itself owe a great deal to these
activities. Putting it mildly. If you read back a couple of posts I'm
not saying that the jews were unwilling to join up & fight for the
British, but that the recent jewish immigrants from Russia were
unwilling to fight for Britain allied as it was to Tsarist Russia. &
not even that they then didnt fight but that the British overcame this
unwillingness to fight alongside the Russians by setting up special
Jewish brigades who were designated to fight the Turks. Honestly
Mirjam have a read of the book its very interesting, in the main its
about Wilson's & Llyoyd George attitude to a Jewish homeland.

There was usenet before there was Google. Does Google own usenet?

If you don't mean what you say, why don't you just not say it?

Don't blame me or anyone else for what you clearly said.

I thank you for your advice about which books i should read. But Alas
at the moment i am overloaded by other books, some for joy and some
for widening my knowledge about things i need to know. I hope I am not
offending you, but at the moment Wilson`s & Llyoyd George`s attitudes
about the Jewish homeland, aren`t really at the head of my interest.

I'm not saying that the British jews who came to Britain after
Cromwell & the 'Glorious Revolution' didnt fight as willingly as any
other Britons. After all the first thing you see in my grandads
cemetary is a stone for a jewish artillery officer who died on the
western front in 1917. Nor even that these recent immigrants, a
massive increase in the UK jewish population.

1881 represented the beginning of a massive wave of Jewish immigration
from Eastern Europe. This large influx of refugees radically
transformed the Jewish community of Great Britain. The Jewish
community rose from approximately 25,000 in the mid-nineteenth century
to almost 350,000 by 1914. Moreover, the Jewish population underwent
large geographic changes. The original community began to disperse
into suburbs along with their English counterpart, whereas the newly
arrived immigrants settled in the crowded ghettos of East London,
Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, and Glasgow.

were unwilling to fight, but that they was some unwillingness to join
up & fight on the same side as Tsarist Russia. Whos treatment of us,
(Well possibly not you Henry if your family roots go back to the 18th
century, I wold be quite interested to hear more about that at some
time.) imho pales only in the light of more recent events of ww2

Note the near 3 year gap in the timeline below, one of the possible
reasons, for the "lack of interest" which I find extremely plausable,
which is often the best you can say about history & especially about
ww1, is elaborated on in "God, guns and Israel : Britain, the First
World War and the Jews in the Holy Land Jill Hamilton"

Chronology of the British Jewish Legion Battalions (“Judeans”) of
World War One
1914/10
British War Office inaugurates recruitment movement to a raise a
battalion consisting entirely of Jews. Recruiting began in the East
End of London but shortly was abandoned due to lack of interest.
1917/07/27
Jabotinsky convinces the War Office to recruit Russian Jews for a
Jewish Battalion. The formation of the first Jewish unit begins in
London.

the rest of the chronology is here
http://www.jewisheastend.com/jewishlegion.html#legion

Along with medals & pictures etc

thanks for correcting me on the introduction of conscription Henry,
lazily I've thought it was 1917 for years, assuming that this was
about the same period as the short lived British & French mutinies &
the general hopelessness & stalemate on the western front

It's more than that. Google only gets a copy at the same time all the
news servers get their copies. There is no rush downloading from
other servers, because it hasn't been cancelled there. Only "removed
from this group's online archive." This group is Google.

Google's most important role is as an archive. It took over this job
from Deja-News. (A pun on deja vu) So posts that were made when you
weren't looking, usually before you were looking, can be found and
read. Their archives go back more than 20 years. All of it still
free.

(It is still possible to issue a system-wide cancel, but they are not
popular because most news servers don't honor them. Whoever wrote
the software for Usenet (newsgroups) put in a cancel function, for
completeness if nothing else, but I'm sure he himself (or the next
guy) put in the abillity for each news server to process or ignore a
cancel.)

>which is what I did as soon as the message was approved & published,

Doing this does almost nothing. Very few people here read this
newsgrroup, and few people read any newsgroup, via google. It's
awkward and inconvenient, and fits too little on the page, and even
with the fastest connection people have at home, it is slower than
what used to be called an off-line reader. Where all the messages are
downloaded in batch and exist on the harddrive of the individual user
in his own computer. Regardless of the reasons, people here don't
read this newsgroup via google.

So google is just like one library where these posts are kept, while
almost everyone doesn't go to that library. They have a home
subscription, directly from another news server. (Most news servers
have no web access. They are only accessed through newsreaders, like
Forte Agent, Thunderbird, Outlook Express, Outlook, plus one or more
programs that run on Macs. Also, some newsgroups will receive emails
and post them.)

When you post a usenet message, it is transmitted to news servers all
over the world, often in less than a minute to many or most of them.
Unless something is wrong locally, I think under 10 minutes to all of
them. It's transmitted to one's own news server almost
instantaneously.

It sits on these newsservers and nothing that happens over at
google-land affects that in the slightest. And people using all these
other newsservers will download that post when they download others.
