You do it at night when there's nobody around. This, apparently, is
what the perpetrators did. I suspect it may already be in Germany or
Austria.

I read that an exact duplicate sign was made several years ago when
the original was being restored. The duplicate has already been
installed. Yes, the original is gone, but if you hadn't read about
it, you would never know.
The article said there was a two or three hour space between security
patrols. Once again we can see the Polish government's priorities.

Everyone,
I just heard on the radio at 4:00 Pacific time that parts of the sign
have been recovered and people were arrested in Warsaw. That's all
the details they gave. I'm sure more info will follow. At least the
mystery of why it was taken will be solved even if the whole sign no
longer exists.

A few states in the southern USA have reintroduced chain gangs. The
perps should have to do a few years of that kind of Arbeit before we Macht
them Frei again...

The 5 men arrested are between 20 and 39. Their reason is not known.
I don't care if sign or other stuff is authentic, as long as it looks
basically like the original. Maybe some would try to claim that if
it's not 100% authentic, the history is not true, but I'd want to be
convinced that the absence of the original sign or other original
stuff would really make a difference.

WARSAW, Poland – Police said early Monday that they have found the
infamous "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign that was stolen on Friday from the
gate of the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz.
Police spokeswoman Katarzyna Padlo said that the sign was found in
northern Poland. She said police also detained five men aged between
25 and 39 who are being transported them to Krakow for questioning.
Padlo said the steel sign, which symbolizes to the world the
atrocities and cruelty of Nazi Germany, has been cut into three
pieces.
The sign that topped a main gate at the Auschwitz memorial site was
stolen before dawn on Friday. State authorities made finding it a
priority and appealed to all Poles for assistance.
More than 1 million people, mostly Jews, died at Auschwitz which Nazi
Germany built in occupied Poland during World War II
I'm sure more will follow.

I think that's a little unfair....the sign stayed untouched for over
60 years...why would the Polish "government" keep it under constant
surveillance? Stephen Fry, a UK TV 'personality', also made a
comment recently about "remembering which side of the border Auschwitz
was on"...as if borders meant anything in occupied Poland.
For the record, Auschwitz I is not that daunting when compared with
Auschwitz II (Brzezinka/Birkenau) which stretches as far as the eye
can see.

Now I've heard they didn't have ideological motives. They wanted to
sell it, and it was cut in 3 pieces, each with one word.
It didn't say that they already had arrangements to sell it, but I
would think even if so, the police would't release that until they had
tried to find out who the buyers were, and also tried to arrest them,
something that would require Interpol (if that still exists) or
something like it if they're outside Poland.

I wasn't referring to the sign in particular, but to the Polish
governments' and populations' treatment of and feelings toward Jews
throughout history and to the present. Yes, I'm generalizing and
stereotyping, but as a whole, it's not a pretty picture.
By the way, one report said the security cameras didn't record
anything. They only had live feeds to the web. Insert Polish joke
here, and my heritage on one side is Polish.
It seems that the sign issue is resolved, hopefully for the best, and
now it's back to lurk mode.

The treatment and feeling toward Jews varied in Poland just as it did
in all other countries. You could equally say that Jewish history is
not a "pretty picture".
And let's not forget which European country welcomed Jews when many
others were expelling them.

Auschwitz I is where the vast maority of non Jewish tourists go - the
poles yms call it museaum. Aushwitz II Birkenau, where the vast majority
of the killing took place is visited mostly by Jewish groups.
BTW the curent issue of Jewish Action (not yet on line) has pictures of
our trip this past summer including a nice picture of a bunch of Israeli
teenage girls draped in Israel flags listening to a survivor discussing
her arrival and time at Auschwitz. Her speech was extremely heart
rendering.
