If you look at the Amazon listing for "The Kings Depart", recommended
in this group, you will find that their software has made Maccabee
into a Scottish/Irish name: MacCabbee.

I'm not surprised. Very few Gentiles I have spoken to have ever heard
of Judah Maccabee.
Most people who have their last name begin with "Mac" or "Mc" are of
Scottish or Irish origin,

Shakespeare's play "MacBeth" is a good example. The hero is a Scottish
lord.

Most every Christian I know understands the name, but that's because
their bible contains the books of Macabees.

And here in the UK we've got the alt-rock/pop band The Maccabees. I've no
idea whether they know the root of their name, but I suspect they don't, and
I'm pretty sure the majority of their fans haven't got a clue where it comes
from.

Surveys done of Americans in the age group 12-25 indicate that many of
them don't know who George Washington was,
when the American Civil War took place, or when World War I took
place.
A man 60 years of age asked me what the First World War was all about
and who fought in it.

<Sigh>. Why does this bring to mind "those who choose to ignore history
are doomed to repeat it"?

Frequently misquoted. George Santayana's original thought was:
"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

I don't think the ignorance is by choice in either case. The problem is
the school system and it's distorted priorities.
People simply aren't taught history anymore.

Incidentally, the quotation you posted was by the philosopher
Santayana.
