What was the situation during the war for Jewish slave laborers at
Mercedes-Benz? What about other german car companies?

Specifically, I've always had the impression that Jews got more food
than in concentration camps, so as to get more work out of them, but
not as much as they needed. That it was planned or at the very least
implemented that the Jews would weaken, and then they were sent back
to concentration or death camps.

Does anyone know?

I don't know much about German car companies, but the efforts of
Leica, the German camera company, were heroic and moving:

I think mercedes was at the opposite pole from Leica.

You're so right.

I think I heard of this a little bit a couple years ago and I'm glad
you posted it.

It's worth following the links at the bottom. Some have been deleted,
including the Youtube video which it says was removed by the user, but
the others are good.

Especially

Even the photographs of magazine articles are interesting. If you
click on them separately and then enlarge them with Image Zoom, a free
add-on for Firefox (I suppose other browsers have something like it),
you can read the text on most of them. LIke the picture of Shekel, a
magazine by the American Israel Numismatic Association, still
published in March of 2002 and maybe still, with a Leica camera on the
cover and this story inside.

For a list of the German automobile companies who employed slave labor
in the concentration camps see http://www.remember.org/educate/companies.html

The slave laborers did not live in the factories, but in were
"accommodated" in concentration camps. For a description of the
conditions in one of these camps see the Wikipedia article on the
Flossenburg Concentration Camp. One of the 30,000 prisoners who died
there was a teen-ager who would have been my brother-in-law had he
survived. He may well have been given more food than Jews at
Auschwitz or Treblinka, who were consigned to death by gas rather than
overwork, but it wasn't enough to keep him alive.

Yup. This from a Googletran of German Wiki:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daimler-Benz

1932 was the company after the Adam Opel AG and the Auto Union AG's third-
largest automobile producer in Germany. The end of 1932 it employed only
8850 people, in 1928 there were 14,281. Until 1943, the workforce grew to
67,905 persons, of which about 6% and 40% of POWs were forcibly recruited
or foreigners. Also concentration camp prisoners, for example, 1060 people
in the Mannheim plant, or 500 in the factory Reichshof who worked during
World War II for Daimler-Benz. In the workplace, women were increasingly
active as the men stood at the front. Consolidated revenue grew by 65
million marks in 1932 to 942 million marks in 1943. About one third of
these were generated in 1943 with aircraft engines. 1941 76% of the
turnover of the company made, ie without the participations, army orders,
the rest of the orders was from authorities, party organizations, the war
economy and for export.

Thanks for that link. Every Jew should boycott these companies.

I have problems even riding in a Mercedes. The gas trucks (Prior to the
gas chambers being built in the camps) were Mercedes.

I understand your anguish and I have never owned a German car, but mi-idach
gisa (OTOH), if we were to boycott every company (including PARTS
manufacturers) that wronged us the list would be too long. Many, if not
most, kitchen and laundry appliances in Israeli homes, are of German origin.
Modern Israeli submarimes are of German origin.

Some of my Jewish friends have worked for Deutsche Bank. I, OTOH, have never
worked for Deutsche, but if I had, I would have considered the compensation
to be reparations.

Best,
Abe

Didn't know that. I have a friend who has a BMW. Her uncle and her
father have them and so she thinks it's okay. I do ride in that a
little bit.

Decades ago at some Jewish singles thing, a friend and I were leaving
and found a mercedes parked in front of my car. I said to her, I
don't know why any Jew would own a mercedes. It turns out the guy who
owned it was getting to his car as I said that. He objected to my
comment in some mild way. I said, "I would not have said anything if
I'd known the owner could hear me."
