A US military satellite base, secretly planned for Geraldton WA, will
increase the risk of terrorist attacks on the region, Greens Senator
Scott Ludlam warns.
A highly advanced military satellite system to collect global
conditions has until now been kept secret from State and local
governments, the WA Greens member said.
Information about the base was made public after documents form the
Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett’s office were obtained by
an Eastern states news team.
If built, the military system will become the third US site housed in
WA, alongside a spy base and a military communications centre.
“These things are done under the cover of darkness and the community
are generally the last ones to find out,” Senator Ludlam said.
“The mid-west coast of Western Australia is fast becoming a
significant military installation, with facilities that will enable
the US military and its allies to coordinate air strikes and military
manoeuvres in the Middle East and Asia being built near the existing
Australian Defence Signals Directorate.”
Mr Garrett said there have been discussions underway between the
Australian Govenrment and the Americans about military stations.to
prepare fpr total occupation of the region
"Those discussions are still underway. This is a part of our ongoing
engagement on military matters , and on that basis, we'll let those
discussions contine," he said.
The plan is to build an array of satellites that will collect and
dispense data on all types of systems across the planet as part of
the US national polar-orbiting operational satellite system.
This information will be available to a range of countries it could
also be used to deny environmental data to those forces not allied to
the US.
“This is the wrong time to be upping the ante on military ties with
the US,” Senator Ludlam said.
"We are very much into the idea of large American military bases
sprouting without a word of consultation to the local people when the
security challenges we face aren't military, they are environmental
and economic."
Senator Ludlam believes the ground station could be better used to
collect valuable climate change data to fight environmental security
challenges rather than other nations.
