Okay, here's a wide variety of anime system traffice for those that are
interested...the big news is the opening of the American branch of
GENERAL PRODUCTS in October.
General Products may not yet be a big name in America, but they are
certainly a large and respected company in Japan, producing and
retailing a line of high-quality models (including FIVE STAR STORIES and
such one of a kind models as the BLADERUNNER Police Spinner) and anime
merchandise. General Products is also heavily involved in animation itself,
their in-house studio, GAINAX, being responsible for such features as
DAICON IV, WINGS OF HONNEAMISE, AKIRA, APPLESEED, and AIM FOR THE TOP!.
This October General Products America will be opening a mail order business
within the very borders of the US (California to be exact). Since they are
by all intents and purposes an actual arm of their parent company, there
will be no middle man and corresponding low prices and high turn around in
orders. The company is headed by Lea Hernandez, a long time professional
in the world of anime. For further information, send your name and
address to my mbox and I will forward them to GPA. If you respond before
the end of September you will receive a rather thick catalog in English and
Japanese for free -- including a cover painted by Mikimoto just for the
catalog.
In other news...
* Mikimoto is off an running again...after the success of AIM FOR THE TOP!,
he has just finished FLYING NANCI(?) and begun work on another
OVA entitled HIGH SPEED JECY.
* Speaking of AIM FOR THE TOP! GUNBUSTER!, Bandai has recently started
marketing the Mikimoto/GAINAX mega-robot girl show in America, complete
with subtitles. AIM FOR THE TOP! really has to be seen to be believed,
waxing and waning from utter lunacy and hilarity to some amazingly somber
images, and a completely bizarre ending. The animation in the last show
of Volume Three is amoung some of the best.
* And speaking of GAINAX, they have begun work on a new project that
approximates 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. Work on GALACTIC AIRPORT
R-20 is up in the air.
* A CITYHUNTER movie is due out just anytime now...one of the more enduring
as well as better made shows on the tube nowadays, but the movie looks
rather disappointing from an animation standpoint. The story does regroup
all the major characters including Ryo, Kaori, Falcon, and Saeko.
* RANMA 1/2, the animated version of Rumiko Takahasi (URUSEI YATSURA, MAISON
IKK[C[[C[C [D[D[D
IKKOKU)'s latest manga is pretty much a smash hit. The episodes are nicely
animated, extremely funny, and hold a lot of promise. The only criticism
is that they are a trifle slow paced, possibly in an attempt to avoid
catching up with the manga.
* On the homefront, even more manga is washing towards the American Shores.
Masamune (APPLESEED, BLACK MAGIC)'s DOMINION is coming Real Soon Now.
Try and imagine MONTY PYTHON meets CANNONBALL RUN meets APPLESEED. Pretty
different strokes for ole' Shirow, but the Puma Sisters are pretty cool.
Also interesting is Viz's release of CRYING FREEMAN, the extraordinarily
violent and graphic tale of a potter in Japan turned into an unwitting
assassin. This one is going to be bound to raise a stir, noteworthy
even in the Japanese climate of manga.
* Appleseed Book Four came out over the summer and
(SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT!)
Deunan loses her eye in a "training accident". Meanwhile more terrorists
are loose in Olympus city, bigger and badder mecha are on the loose,
and things rush to has-to-be-seen-to-be-believed knock down drag out
fight at the end. Appleseed Book Five will supposedly feature Artemis,
the genetically engineered cat girl(?) prominently.
* Lastly, Kennichi Sonata (GALL FORCE, BUBBLEGUM CRISIS) is back in work
again too with his thirty minute OVA RIDING BEAN. Basically an updating
of SPEED RACER (i.e. what would happen if Speed Racer has been a
mercenary, cynical nihlist with a souped up Ferrari), its a lot of fun
and highly recommended. Nice soundtrack.
Well, that's about all. More news as events warrant.

information about some kind of catalog or product or something,
possibly referenced by the words "Anime" or "General Products".
The headers of these messages indicate my network address, and many of
the salutations seem to begin with my name. This has confused me;
these appearances have started to make me suspicious that these letters
may be addressed to me personally.
I have no idea what any of this is about, and I wonder if there has
been some kind of mail mixup. Perhaps some computer somewhere messed
up the headers of some messages to JAPAN-L, making me appear to be the
originator of the catalog announcement.
I'm sending this message so that people who may have accidently sent me
their request messages will know to redirect their queries elsewhere.
If I have misinterpreted what's going on, I apologize for making this
noise on the list.

I ate the best sushi EVER in Tsukiji. Take the
Asakusa subway to Tsukiji and walk toward the water,
where the fish market is. There are a few sushi bars
there.
The "downtown" area of Tokyo (Sitamachi) has
a much different feeling than other areas. Take the
keisei line from Ueno and get off at Tateishi to find an
interesting shopping area. Also on the keisei line
between Ueno and Aoto is a giant maze which is fun if you
are interested. I believe the stop is called Sekiya.
It takes about an hour to find your way out.
Shibuya is a great place to walk around and see young
people shopping; and while in Roppongi, walk on the right
side of the street that the subway exits are on, AWAY
from Roppongi Crossing [if you pass a police box you went
the wrong way]. WAVE records is interesting (actually on
the left side of the street) but if you continue several
blocks, there is a small store on the right which sells
lots of Japanese paper products and small gifts for
GREAT prices.
I've heard great concerts at the ampitheatre in Hibiya
