Hi,

is there anyone who could help with translating calligraphic writing on
a Japanese silk painting (18th/19th ? century).

On the back stick two pieces of paper (one of it probably of recent date)
where, I assume, information is given about the painting.

On demand I can give the URL where to find highly resolved images,
or I could send them by e-mail.

Thanks for help!!

If you just post the URL to the group, maybe someone can help. You might
also want to try the sci.lang.japan newsgroup, as that probably has more
people who can help with reading cursive Japanese.

Hmm, tricky one. I have to admit I can only pick out a few characters so
that's no good......

Have you tried e-mailing any art galleries, museums, or perhaps unis where
Japanese is taught? A good museum would be the V&A (Victoria and Albert
museum) in London. Uni wise you could contact someone from the art
department at SOAS (School of Oriental and African studies), also in London.

Alternatively I could try asking my Japanese teacher (who is actually
Japanese).

Dear Frank,

many thanks for your proposals.

Meanwhile there is an answer in the sci.lang.japan newsgroup.

But with my Windows 95 system and NS browser (V. 4.7) I haven't yet
solved the problem of encoding the japanese character set in
the answer.

Technique!!

I presume that you haven't actually been able to get your hands on the
translation yet. If not, then don't worry - my Japanese teacher said she'll
look at it. Plus she's old enough to know the more complex form of kanji.
I'll e-mail you the translations when she finds the time to look at the
screens.

Hi,

Where's the URL? I'd be interested in taking a look.

But, yes. Please have a look at sci.lang.japan .
The experts are already discussing the finer points!

Right now, posting with an image or scanned picture is easy in
internet although you do not read Japanese.
