I’d recommend first trying whether your local library has the vols. you
want, or can get them thru inter-library loan. [In Tullamore, the
librarians were very helpful about this, tho admittedly I cultivated
them shamelessly & was mostly seeking non-fiction works not likely to be
in huge demand @ the time.] Inter-library loan systems have become
pretty sophisticated as the technology for tracking collections has
become simplified & systematized.
A note to readers in the U.S.: if you’re near the campus of a public
univ., check to see what privileges you may have there, as in many
states these libraries are required to have @ least some parts of their
collections available to the public [after all, your taxes help pay for
them]. You might have to pay a fee for ILL requests, or be restricted
to in-library reading, or there may be other restrictions that reflect
policies to maximize student & faculty access during the academic terms.
I’ve never thought to ask if this is true of Irish universities, but I’m
sure someone here knows.
Of course, there’s also the option of buying the books, sight unseen, if
you’re the adventurous sort. [OTOH, if before you plunk down your
hard-earned cash, you’d like a bit of further advice on the content of
any of the vols. listed in “Irish Poetry 101: Post 2," feel free to
e-mail me.]
Of course, one can try various on-line sites – some huge chains, some
independents - for any out-of-print services they may offer:
Ireland & UK:
Amazon.com http://www.amazon.co.uk/
Books Ulster http://www.booksulster.com/index.html
Books Upstairs http://www.booksirish.com
Eason & Son http://www.easons.com/
Fred Hanna’s Bookshop http://www.hannas.ie/
Hodges Figgis http://www.hodgesfiggis.ie/
Internet Bookshop http://www.bookshop.co.uk/
Kenny’s Bookshop http://www.galway.iol.ie/resource/kennys/
Waterstone’s On-Line http://www.waterstones.co.uk
Winding Stair Bookshop http://www.windingstair.ie/windingstair/
N. America:
Barnes & Noble http://www.bn.com/
Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/
There are also the on-line services of independent second-hand &
antiquarian booksellers:
Ireland:
Cathach Books http://www.rarebooks.ie/
N. America:
Alibris http://www.alibris.com/cgi-bin/texis/searcher
Bibliofind http://www.bibliofind.com/
Bookfinder.com http://www.bookfinder.com/
[I apologize to those living in those huge swathes of the world beyond
the reach of these services: I haven’t a clue as to how to order these
books if you live in the S. Hemisphere, or in Asia.]
& let’s not forget that Real World independent & second-hand bookshops
w/o web pages also exist, & might have – or know how to get – these
books. The American Booksellers Assoc’n site, at
http://www.ambook.org/, has a search engine that can help in locating
such a resource.
Again, if you’re nr a univ., the bookstore that serves the campus is a
good place to start - & if the book is a univ. press publication, one
possibility is to check w/ the press directly, as academic printers tend
to keep looooooong backlists.
