OK folks, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I need to be in Dublin in about a
fortnight to get conferred - boring speeches, silly clothes, proud parents,
prostrating myself at the feet of Fr Des - you know the drill. Anyway, I've
just realised my passport's expired (since September) so Ryanair's flying
cattle trucks are out.

The thing is, Aer Lingus lists "Work ID" as an acceptable alternative
for flights between the UK and De Auld Country, but what does this mean?
Is the ID issued by my employer OK or is this just for Aer Lingus staff?

If I'm really stuck, I can probably fly to Belfast with Easyjet who will
accept passports up to 2 yrs after they've expired, but that'd entail
<gulp> travelling through Nordieland.

How did I get into this mess? Feck's sake, I'd forget my own head if it
wasn't bolted on.

Do Ryanair insist on a passport or will they accept other ID?
Phone them? I thought they would accept other ID but it has to bewith photo?
Gis a shout when you get near here and I will show you my new empire.

I think they're completely rigid on this one. Bloody typical.

Could do, although I don't fancy being put on hold for ages. I
thought I'd ask here first, s.c.i. being the repository of the
all human knowledge.

The first BioSciCon? Unless you and Bren have been having little
trysts behind my back?

No they're not - they accept oher currently valid photo id's such as driving
licences or ID cards. Go check their website.

You could even take serious risks, and widen the BioSciCon to become the
GreatUnwashedSCIcon, and expose yourself (ahem) to the germs of the hoi poloi...
When'll you be over?
The last SCIcon was molto international, as well as nourishing (we actually
ate as well as drank), and NOBODY was harmed in the process - well, except
Mullo who was nearly bitten by a particularly vicious mussel. So why not
live dangerously? We're well overdue a proper conflagration.

Ryaniar and Aer Lingus for that matter demand photo ID for UK-Ireland.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Aer Lingus only tell you on the confirmation Email.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

However Work ID, Club membership Student Union with a photo ID
are all acceptable AFAIAA.

Anything with a photo, your name, inside a sealed card.

Ryanair will also accept a Photo Bus pass travelcard as photo ID

A London Transport Bus\Train Pass anyway.

To get one of these you simply take a ultility bill or other
documentary ID plus a passport photo to an Underground Station and ask
for a Photo Bus\Train pass.

This is free. You needn't buy a ticket at the time.

I even explained what I needed it for. and the guy just shrugged.

An expired passport still constititutes valid photo ID
even if it can no longer function as a passport.

I don't have either unfortunately. Anyway, I emailed Aer Lingus and
my employee (yes, somebody does actually pay me to do... stuff) id
should be OK.

Conferring is the afternoon of 11th Dec. (Thursday fortnight). A doctoral
pub crawl (full academic dress optional) is traditional so we could
arrange something.

There was both aytin and drinkin in it, as the ad used to say.

I think it's about time I materialised in the flesh.

This is where I say : There ought be grant money in an "Oblivious
Science-Genius Study".
And : I didn't realize you folks could go to the UK without a passport, Duh
for me. Maybe a birth certificate would work? That's what we need for
Canada and Mexico.

And it would've been perfect except that everyone left their kids at home!
:)

You should be able to get your passport renewed at the embassy in London. If
that's not a happener, try to get a temporary passport. I had a similar
situation a few years back and the Irish consulate in Boston get me a new
passport in about 10 days.

Good luck.

I'm oblivious but not a genius.

We can, and vice versa. The British are talking about introducing ID
cards though, which could complicate matters if everybody in the UK
someday as to carry some kind of official ID. Doesn't bother me.

Nope, it has to be a photo to prove that we're not planning to hijack the
plane. It should be patently obvious that even I was organised enough to
hijack a plane, I'd have forgotten why by the time it got to the
target.

Speaking of planes, here's the world's only planes-and-dogs joke: How
many pilots does it take fly an Airbus?

Answer: One, and a dog. The pilot is only there to feed the dog. The dog
is there to bite the pilot's hand if he tries to touch the controls.

Flight's in a fortnight so 10 working days is cutting it fine. And I

my GP once for about 10 minutes. Maybe if I take along my staff id
card and say: "Look! the university is convinced I am who I say I

Des has claimed to be in Dublin but no-one has seem him. This is his big
chance.

It used to be traditional to go to O'Neills. Now it's traditional to argue
on-line for weeks about where to go.
