There are some very good Winter-themed pictures appearing these last few
days, I thought it would do no harm to remind people of this :)

One question we didn't settle was whether photos could be used from before
the date the comp was announced or whether only new ones could be submitted;
no one has given any opinions and whilst I'd prefer current ones, I'm easy
either way so post whatever you like as long as it's a photo you took
yourself (normal rules of decency applying <bg> )

Original Announcement & Instructions
============================
Believe it or not, it's almost 4 years since we had our last one
photo competition - Jan 2006 - and I think we are well overdue
another one to help shed the wintertime blues and give ourselves something
better than the sheer junk that is flooding SCI these days.

I thought it might be good to theme the competition as "Winter 2009-2010".
It will run much as the last time, people can upload photos into various
categories, we will vote by giving each photo a mark out of 10, there will
be a winner in each category and an overall winter. The main difference to
the last time is that we will run it over a longer period - some people
thought we cut it off too quickly the last time - so I'm proposing 1st March
as the closing date for uploading photos and allow about 6 weeks for voting
which will take us up to the week after Easter. I'm flexible on all that, if
people think something different would be better then they should post it
here.

The place for uploading the photos is the same as before -
http://public.fotki.com/scistuff/ - the login name is scistuff and the
password is sci123. That gives you admin access but if you want to change
something in the way the account is set up please don't just do it yourself,
ask here and if it seems reasonable or popular then I will do it. I've taken
the risk of leaving his open to everyone to login, I did it that way the
last time and there were no problems; if anyone does muck about with the
account, I will have to set up something more secure which will inevitably
be more cumbersome.

The photos from the last competition are still in there under January 2006
except for the Babies album which is in the Private section so that it can
only be viewed when logged in.

I have set up initial albums for categories Christmas, Snow, Landscapes,
Sunrise/Sunset, People, Animals/Birds/Fish, General and Babies.

These can be modified or added to if there is any demand but again I have to
emphasise that people should not modify albums themselves - please ask here
and I will do it in order to ensure things are done in a controlled way.

So get snapping and uploading, the main thing to remember is that although
it's called a competition, it's mainly meant as bit of SCI fun :)

Very nice, Ger. Looks like you all have had about as much snow as we have
had, this year. Hope the Irish have enjoyed it. I've been wondering when
they're going to retire the snow songs from Christmas here. Seems whenever
you mention snow, these days, all anyone does is moan and groan. I can't
see any of my friends actually "dreaming of a white Christmas" or any other
calendar day. Kinda sad that what once was an occasion for fun outdoors and
an excellent excuse to be guiltlessly-lazy indoors is now ......an
inconvenience, at best.

It's turning out (the snow and ice, and prolonged cold snap - there
ought to be a better expression than cold snap for the last 3 weeks,
and the next week at least which Met Eireann promises us - to be a
little more than an inconvenience. Ireland is totally unequipped to
deal with sub zero temps and their consequences. In my Pyreneean
youth, we used to change all our tires to snow tires in early Nov,
till March or so. Roads were systematically cleared with snowploughs
if required, or at least gritted/salted, because this was a regular
occurrence. Here, it's once every 20 years, so there is nothing short
of pandemonium, with most schools closed - i.e. have not returned from
xmas hols. This has become a national obsession, and gritting or the
lack of it, growing shortages of salt and grit, deadly slippy
pavements and the consequent multiplied admission in Dublin's already
overcrowded A&E's have taken up at least 3/4 of tonight's 9 pm tv
news.
It's -7 degree centigrade outside my door right now. We're doing ok-
ish in Kildare, we're lucky that we do not have slippy hills to
contend with, so commuting takes a lot more time, but can be done
reasonably safely at very slow speed. I love the snow, but at this
stage, I wish we could get back to more clement temps.

My point is he's not really a Liberal. He's actually a hard-right
conservative. But, in Ireland, he qualifies as a Liberal, in my
humble opinion.

I did say....at best! :)

We never change our all season radial tires, don't use studded snow tires
and we drive through snow and ice, off & on - from Nov till March. Might be
a thought next time you buy tires.

I'm not surprised. Dublin got snow? Wow! Don't be angry, Cat(h). I was
making a general statement and haven't looked at your weather report or road
conditions update, lately. Like say, maybe not since summer 2007. :)

>It's -7 degree centigrade outside my door right now.

Hmmmn, that's 19F. Yep, that's damned cold....for where you are. Anything
around 20 is fine by me.....I hate it when it gets down around zero. I bet
Doc could beat both of us......somewhere in the mid west it hit -50F last
night (-45C). Be glad you're not a Florida farmer tonight. They're crying
in their orange juice down there......citrus crop is probably lost and so
are the strawberries.

A friend just sent me a "winter poem" it went like this :
WINTER
Shit it's cold!
(the end)

Glad to hear you're coping. Shop when the roads are clear, between storms.
Always leave a shovel and a blanket in the car. Go slow, plan on taking
twice as long to get anywhere.......stay well away from Dublin's craziness.
Call in sick if you have to! Everyone needs a mental health day, now and
then!
And stay safe! It could all be gone soon and who knows if /when it'll snow
there again!

Indeed. Spud and veg farmers are up the creek here too, and with the
length of this cold stretch, some of the livestock guys will be in
trouble soon too.

Oh, we've no complaints. Mostly the last few days, the sun is
splitting the rocks between a few snow showers, great opportunities
for cool photos, etc. So far, we have been relatively able to commute
to work without too much bother, and on the one day we couldn't I
worked from home. Plan for the week end is to stock up on food and
fuel for open fire, and batten down the hatches, as forecast for
Sunday is for quite a bit more snow and lots more frost.

my post. Sorry if I came across a bit too abruptly...

No worries, wouldn't blame you if you were. It's folks from places like
Kildare and Dublin (and Atlanta) that have every reason to complain.
Unsanded roads and the wrong tires are a scary and dangerous combo! I've
been watching the weather like a hawk today.....there's a big storm coming
in tonight w/sleet&freezing rain.....and a bluegrass jam in the next town
over. We'll go, but I'm relieved to see that the worst of it is coming in
tomorrow morning-ish......when I'll be safely off the road. :)

Mostly we're watching the creeks on either side of town...both are high and
look like choc milk.

I really do hate it when it gets that cold. It's cold here today, and
sort've damp/raw.... but not *that* cold. Before the ice and snow come
tonight, I've got work to do outside.

It's a nerve wracking time for farmers, that's for sure.

Well stay safe! I'd better get those lights down or I'll have the last
