My name is Paul Carr. I post from time to time over at soc.culture.irish.
About an hour ago, I subscribed to your newsgroup and I was very impressed
by the volume of posts here. There's been like 24 posts in the past 65
minutes alone.
Soc.culture.irish is, by comparison, sluggish. You'd have 24 posts in one
day over there.
So, my question is: why are you so successful here on soc.culture.scottish?
Is your newsgroup moderated? Is cross-posting restricted?
Anyway, we're having a bit of a discussion over on soc.culture.irish about
how soc.culture.irish has declined since the glory days. What about you
folks over at soc.culture.scottish, any nostalgia for glory days too?
Oh, I'll crosspost this one to soc.culture.irish. We need the help of our
enlightened Scottish neighbours, friends and colleagues to bring more
on-topic, informative and constructive traffic back to soc.culture.irish.

SCS is a group of degenerate, anti-social misfits, with the odd
(usually very odd!) human being thrown in for good measure. Our
healthy post count has several primary drivers:
a) A desire to post more often than the next person
b) A desire to post more shite than the next person
c) A desire to have the last say on guns, circumcision, Eyerack or any
of the other myriad factors that differentiate us from some of the
most vocal of our diaspora.
d) A desire to have the last say on Scots, language or dialect?, How
much money should we spend promoting Gaelic, Edinburgh or Glasgow or
any of the myriad factors that keep resident Scots at each others
throats instead of rebuilding our Nation.
e) A belief that SCS is too quiet, which prompts the initiation of a
thread from c) or d) above. It's good to disguise it as something else
initially, but don't worry it will revert to type within 3 posts.
However the one thing that may really differentiate us, is that
regardless of our mutual loathing of our fellow denizens, we hate
outsiders even more. There are few sights that swell the chest more
effectively than seeing sworn foes unite to give Rabbie Henderson a
good kicking.
I hope that answers your question?

Occasionally, as we sit around the scs bonfire, chewing
the bones of some long-dead companion, we reminisce
about what they posted, and whether it was in Good Taste.

Paul, it may be that scs simply has more potential posters than sci
because our diaspora is more widely spread, while yours is (I assume)
mostly confined to North America. Many of the posts here come from
people of Scottish origin who originally had questions about Scottish
matters and decided to stay on and become regulars. We've had people
contact us from Moscow, Argentina and Zimbabwe, and as a large part of
the Scottish diaspora was centred on the US, Canada, Australia, and
New Zealand, we have regular posters from those countries who stopped
in to ask a question and decided to stay on.
Aye that! *And* the likes of SAotI. It brings a tear of joy

Doc
I'm sure that there is a lot of shite posted on SCS. I am sure that there
is more shite posted on SCS in absolute terms than on SCI. But, relatively
speaking, I think the percentage of shite is probably a lot less on SCS than
SCI. Of course there are newsgroups that are even worse than SCI. Check
out soc.culture.welsh and soc.culture.celtic and soc.culture.british.
Soc.culture.british may still have a little life in it yet.
Soc.culture.welsh and soc.culture.celtic are zombies or vampires now. Once
upon a time, they were human beings but now they have been taken over
completely by spam, muslim hate, jew hate, hate-mongery of every kind,
conspiracy crackpot theories and what not.
When I write about shite, I mean harmful shite, not harmless shit. Harmless
shite is fine. Playful banter like you have in a pub with a pint of
Guinness in your hand or whatever the Scots are having is harmless.
SCI is now about 50/50 I think. Half harmful shite and half the rest. A
quick observation of SCS suggests to me that it's about 20% harmful shite
and 80% the rest. SCS has about 10 times more posts than SCI. That means
even if in percentage terms the level of harmful shite on SCS is less than
on SCI, in absolute terms the level of harmful shite on SCS is more than on
SCI. C'est la vie. On the other hand, on soc.culture.british, it looks
like 80% harmful shite and 20% the rest and on soc.culture.welsh and
soc.culture.celtic it looks like 95%+ harmful shite, pretty much the
Undead, in other words.
So why is soc.culture.scottish so successful? I thank you all great Scots
for your feedback. It seems to me that there is more of a political balance
in soc.culture.scottish. I'll divide the political ruler into 7 parts, from
left to right. 1) ultra-left 2) hard left 3) left-of-centre 4) centre 5)
right-of-centre 6)hard right 7) ultra right. The centre of political gravity
on soc.culture.irish is probably between right-of-centre and hard-right but
probably closer to hard-right than right-of-centre. On soc.culture.irish,
you have hard-right conservative blow-hards who think that they are
centrists. It seems to me that the centre of political gravity of
soc.culture.scottish is centre. Over time, that leads to a much better
virtual environment for maximum discussion and minimum nastiness.

scale. The *most* Conservative posters here are

Holy shite! Are you sure you're not over-thinking this a

Presuming, of course, that you work from the assumption
politics enters or colours every discussion...in which case,
you're correct, but speaking for myself, I don't find that to
be so...there are plenty of non-ideological threads and dis-
cussions around here.
My suspicion is that a lot of SCS's "success" is owed to the
fact that it has a large...and very much under-represented
in this thread...distaff contingent. It seems to be one of
the last USENET bastions of a reasonably Normal distribu-
tion between male and female posters...I think that makes
for a difference in the stability of the group as a whole.
> You are this Ian Stewart guy, Josiah Jenkins?

On the subject of kitchen equipment - my new dual-fuel cooker (ordered

I can recall 'the good old days' when there were several
*very* funny (humorous) people posting on sci.
"Wee Dave complaining about his Xmas present and Bro
accusing him of being ungrateful" . . . over about a week.

That's only because we can't agree what's Left and what's
Right. But we've all agreed to be EC centrics (or should
that be 'centrists' ?) Would someone please check Wiki !

There are a *lot* of long-term posters in scs. Perhaps some of them
are inclined to lurk most of the time and only pop up when something
catches their attention but they *are* still around.
Perhaps that's the main reason we're still reasonably active compared
to the others you mention.

Yeah, your right of course. The real problem with soc.culture.irish is that
there are a few ultra-serious beings posting on it with no sense of humour
or an appreciation of off-beat quirky humour. In the old days there was
plenty of leg pulls and balmy opinions. Not allowed anymore it seems! :-((

Sounds like the scb crowd.

Yeah, there was a fair bit of cross-posting at one point and we got
to recognise some of the names.

Aye "Kirk Yetholm" that'll be what you mean! Going up there to the Border
Hotel on Saturday night for the Yetholm Whisky Society St Andrew's Day meal.
Allan
Over-thinking? I don't even know what over-thinking means. Elsewhere
I keep a blog where I write about my sexual fantasies. About a few
days ago, this person, who had seen my blog and/or had read negative
reviews of it, added me to her MSN account (I assume she's a woman as
she introduced herself as a woman) and immediately started chatting to
me on MSN and wrote that she disapproved of my blog. She wrote that I
was mentally disturbed, or words to that effect, and that I needed to
go to a psychiatrist. She wrote that there would be hell to pay if my
family found out about it. She wrote that I write about perverted
sex. I didn't have much time to rebut her criticisms as she barred me
within 5 minutes or so. Apparently, she just added me to her MSN for
the sole purpose of letting off some steam against me.
In rebuttal, I write now that, no, I don't think I write about
perverted sex because I write about sex between consenting adults. and
2) I don't libel anyone so I don't see what the problem is with my
exercising my right to freedom of expression and 3) if people don't
want to read it, then don't read it. I'm not stuffing it down anyones'
throats.
Anyway, I do a lot of that overthinking on that sex? blog. Isn't
overthinking the stuff of creativity? Isn't the very definition of
creativity to overthink? What about all those works of fiction?
Overthinking?
As to why my posts are long, maybe one reason is because there are
about 10 times more posts on SCS than SCI. I overcompensate for the
lack of toing and-froing on SCI, by writing longer posts. I don't
think I am the only one but probably I am one of the more extreme
examples, if not THE extreme example on the newsgroup. But, the way I
see it is, at least, I don't cut and paste like the Spammers do. I
think up what I write. ... or, indeed, overthink what I write.
I think a good measure of the success of a newsgroup is the volume of
posts. On SCS, there seems to be about 10 times more posts daily. So,
yeah, I think that is a measure of success. There's a lot of playful
banter on SCS, a lot of goodwillery and lightheartedness. Previously
I termed it, "harmless shite". ;-) I like this. And, as was touched
upon, SCI can get a little serious and wooden in comparison. But, I
think that is an outcome of the fact that posts there are so few and
far between. Actually, if I'm not mistaken, SCI was like SCS about 9
years ago. I first arrived on SCI back in 2000.(and stayed on-and-off
for 3 years or so before taking a 6 year sojourn until the summer of
2009) Back in those days there was a lot more of the playful banter
and witty repartee et cetera et cetera. That was great. And there
were a lot of supporting up-to-date documents for SCI on the internet
so that people, for example, can get to know the principle actors and
what not. But, as was pointed out, many of these supporting
documents, both formal and informal, appear to have gone the way of
the dodo.
As for politics. I take an expansive view of politics. Even if
someone were to write about a cookery recipe or a famous scenic spot,
I'd read politics into it. ;-). Peoples' outlook on life informs
their viewpoints on a whole host of things including what they select
to write about and what they select not to write about.
As for gender balance, well, I think it's great that there is a
reasonably normal distribution between male and female posters on
SCS. But I don't think that is the cause of SCS's success. It is an
outcome of the political balance you have on SCS between left and
right. Take SCI, every 2nd or 3rd thread is to do with God and
religion, you know, the sort of stuff the ordinary man and woman on
the street isn't interested in. I will raise my hands in confession
here and say that, yes, I started one such thread recently when I
suggested we get rid of the Angelus on RTE, the Irish state
broadcaster. There are a number of pretty fervent anti-abortionists
(so-called pro-lifers) on SCI. A few of them, I think are also
misogynistic. I guess in that environment some of the female posters
decided to stop posting and perhaps leave altogether. Now, we've only
got Cait and Doc Aay posting regularly, so far as I can tell. Back in
2000, there was more of a political balance between left and right on
SCI. Now, it leans way way to the right. And, SCI, not surprisingly,
is in trouble which is acknowledged by just about everyone no matter
where they are located or they locate themselves on the political
spectrum.
I suppose instead of complaining all the time, I should do something
about it. Update the FAQ? From 1999 to 2009?
http://www.faqs.org/faqs/cultures/irish-faq/part00/
Set up my own SCI hub?
Are SCS-CONs organized? If so, where do they take place? Glasgow,
Edinburgh, Aberdeen? SCI-CONs are organized on SCI from time to
time. Do you have a SCS version of the SCI cuddle club? HeHe

That sounds more like an outcome rather than a cause. There were a
lot of long-term posters on SCI too. Some of them left.
