In search of today's storm in a teacup story regarding Ireland, the
following takes beating.
Isn't it amazing how those who talk about an "a new Ireland", see red (or
orange), at the drop of a hat;
Today's Irish Times
The wearing of
the orange

------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Gerry Thornley

Soccer: Is nothing sacred? The notion of the Republic of Ireland wearing a
new orange alternate/away strip against Macedonia tomorrow week appeared to
be met with outrage by republicans, traditionalists and perhaps more
pertinently, hard-pressed parents of young football fans yesterday.

The Merrion Square switchboard was inundated with calls from disgruntled
football fans. Vox pops conducted on yesterday morning's radio programmes
gave the new strip a thumbs down.

Meanwhile, the kit's manufacturers, Umbro, and the FAI, were sailing
serenely through it all. The new shirt goes on sale at sports shops today,
and, after all, there is no such thing as bad publicity - least of all in
the commercial world.

Eddie Cox, the FAI's commercial manager, said yesterday that Umbro "haven't
changed the away strip since they took over. They are entitled to a change
and on the basis of market research they came up with this proposal to the
FAI which the FAI was happy to go along with as an alternate (away) strip.
And I would stress that, because a lot of people seem to think that this is
replacing the home jersey."

Cox said the Republic of Ireland "will play in green whenever we can, so I
can't see us wearing it all that often."

Indeed, given that there will be few clashes with countries which also wear
predominantly green, it is therefore quite feasible that the Republic of
Ireland will, ultimately, only wear the new 'orange' strip once - tomorrow
week in Skopje.

Cox played down the possibility of the FAI reaping additional revenue if
the new strip sold more than a stipulated number as part of their five-year
deal with Umbro, believed to be worth in the region of £2.5 million.
Instead he points to the 50-odd games in which various international Irish
teams are supplied with kit by Umbro.

How successful the 'orange' shirt ultimately becomes will partially depend
on the result against Macedonia. "Obviously, success will sell more than
failure, there's no doubt about that, but I feel that the young people will
go for it. It's primarily based at young people, who are more likely to
wear it anyway."

Cox rejects the charge that the FAI, are guilty of exploitation. "There's
two home jerseys and two away jerseys every four years, that's it. That is
absolutely it categorically - no more, no less. That will not change,
because that is exploitation and we wouldn't do that. This will not change
for two years and that is better than most."

"At the end of the day we're in a commercial world and Umbro invest a lot
of money within the FAI and they're entitled, within reason, to have
something that they believe will be commercially acceptable. But it is not,
and I stress it is not, replacing our green jersey. The green jersey is our
first choice and will continue to be our first choice."

Much ado about nothing?

Keith, I think the main problem people have with the new strip is that
it looks so gadawful ugly .. its truly horrible.

But feel free to imagine anti-protestant conspiracies - the new shirt
issue is right up there along with the imaginary anti-protestant boycott
campaign orangmen and thjeir apologists like to think is going on.

I here I wholeheartedly agree. (And this comes from someone who wears a lot
of football shirts).

WHERE did I say there was an "anti-Protestant conspiracy.
Did I imagine it when I heard an RTE reporter say that certain "Republicans
" (their word not mine),
said that they would never been seen in orange.
The anti-Protestant boycott in N.I., is far from imaginary. AS YOU WELL
KNOW.
I have seen the reports on RTE, regarding business closing and people
losing their jobs.

<Lots of stuff snipped>

Ozy,

In falling over yourself to accuse all Catholics of being in the
pan-national front (although having said yourself, that you are a
Catholic and a unionist, shouldn't you relax a little before
painting conspiracy theories with your big orange brush), you're
falling into a trap of believing what Big Ian says.

Really, Ozy, No. 47...
47] 10 July 96

Bairds shop. Boycott by Roman Catholics.

Don't worry Ozy, you can drop the forced manner of saying 'Roman
Catholics' when we know you mean Taigs but no matter. You have
no evidence of an organised boycott by anyone. Couldn't it just
be that in July last year, Catholics were, in distinct and individual
occurances, upset by the activities by some shopkeepers and local
businessmen.

An example...this was on the NI news last July - can't remember
where it happened, sorry. The newsreader gave an example of a
blockade that had been set up. A diabetic woman, in need of insulin,
tried to get through the blockade to the chemist in town. She
found her chemist in the blockade and asked him to let her into
town to get insulin and he refused. She left and went to a town a
little further away to a Catholic-owned chemist to get her insulin.

I hope that this woman is now boycotting her original chemist's. I
would do the same. However, this is not an example of a SF organised
boycott but just some people who got pissed off at being
treated badly during what was a terrible month for NI and
we saw the worst of a lot of people. For you to tie
this into a pan-nationalist conspiracy is saddening.

Also...No. 38
38] 8 July 96

Aldergrove Airport. Peacefial protest by Orangemen and

supporters attacked by DMSU; several children, adults
and 5 pensioners severely beaten by police. (not strictly
relevant to this survey).

Three big arses on a bench to a peaceful protest at the airport.
This protest caused disruption and a lack of peace therefore how
can it have been peaceful. OK, so the unionists didn't nut anybody
but it was hardly peaceful.

Ozy, you have to remember that to be a unionist, you don't
have to believe everything the DUP say. You can question
incidents like the blocking of an airport and if Peter Robinson
says that Catholics are organising a sustained campaign
of whispering bad things about unionists in private as part of
a pan-nationialist front, the thing is, they might not be -
he might just be making it up to gain some political points.

By the way, I don't support SF, I just don't like to see
people make an ass of themselves whichever way they see
NI. In falling for the organised boycott nonsense, you
are.

And there's a child auction going on. Prices are low so turn up
early to avoid the ugly...
