Poll: Americans Suspicious of AIPAC Activities

A recent public opinion poll showed that majority of American citizens of
all ages and backgrounds strongly believe the American Israel Public Affairs
Committee (AIPAC) acts as a foreign agent for the Israeli government.

The poll, which was commissioned by the Council for National Interest (CNI)
and Zogby International, following the publication of reports about AIPAC
being investigated for espionage activities for Israel, reported that 61
percent of the Americans "strongly or somewhat agree" that AIPAC should be
asked to register as a foreign agent and lose its tax exempt status, while
only 12% strongly or somewhat disagree that it should. 27% were unsure on
the issue.

Of the subgroups polled, 77 percent of those aged between 18-29 agreed to
that, while among the Jewish Americans, 15 percent agreed and 15 percent
disagreed, casting a large shadow on the activities of this lobbying group.

On August 30, it was reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
interviewed members of AIPAC in connection with the passing of classified
material to the government of Israel by a Pentagon analyst working in the
office of the Undersecretary of Defense 'Douglas Feith'. A US Congressman,
John Conyers, subsequently called for opening hearings into the leak to
investigate whether that 'Larry Franklin', the Pentagon analyst, was "acting
at the behest of his superiors" and whether a "rogue element in the American
government may have been working with a foreign government," in reference to
the Israeli government.

Mr. Eugene Bird, president of CNI, commented on the results of the poll by
saying, "The poll shows serious doubts that Americans have about the
activities of AIPAC. They strongly endorse the position that we have long
held, that AIPAC should register as an agent of a foreign government and
lose its tax exempt status. For years, Congress has been duped by their
illegal activities."

The America Israeli Public Affairs Committee, as it describes itself on its
website, consider itself an American pro-Israel lobbying group, directly
involved in affecting the United State's relationship with Israel, and is
considered the main power behind the $3 billion of annual US aid to Israel.
