I am not quite sure what you are trying to do. This is Usenet, not
a fan-club, since you don't seem to appreciate the difference!

Mr. Maheri,

Perhaps if you visit the site and gather some facts first, your criticisms
can be more constructive. It seems to me like you are doing exactly what you
were preaching against (in a conversation we had regarding President
Khatami) a couple of months ago, which was criticism just for the sake of
doing it.

p.s. BTW how does creating a web site shows a lack of appreciation for
Usenet?

RM.,

We are constructing a web site for SCI. You can visit it at
the following address:

One of the sections in the site is dedicated to profiles of
SCIers. I have asked all SCIers to either submit their own
profiles or the profile of someone else. The link below
points to my proposition for a profile for F Ashkey. If you
have any comments about its contents or form please feel
free to make them known.

Perhaps you who CAN appreciate the difference can tell me
what has led you to your above conclusion.

I would be more forthcoming about a web site where anybody
who contributes to SCI would give others a profile of themselves
if they so wished, but the 'glowing endosement' of an individual
given at the site mentioned in your original post was not a
'profile', but a series of personal endosements.

Since you are seeking other people's opinion, then let me tell
you mine. First, the title of your web site as 'SCI site'
could be misleading, especially for a newcomer. SCI is not the
exclusive forum for a group of people who choose to submit their
particulars to your site! Why not duly qualify your site's title
to reflect this point? Second, keep the text in the 'profiles'
limited to what the person concerned has to say about themselves,
and if you really have to include anything other than factual
material in these 'profiles', then make sure you mention
'who says so'. If the rest of your web site is anything like
the 'profile' of the individual in your original post, then
I'm afraid your web site has a lot more doing before it can be
taken seriously!

All in all, it seems to me that yours is a knee-jerk reaction
to earlier SCI 'guides' and 'profiles' which has plagued this
newsgroup to its core. Frankly, listing 'your people' against
'their people', is not befitting of a Usenet newsgroup. It can
only help further polarise this newsgroup. A Society.Culture
Usenet newsgroup is about discussing those very topics, not
flamboyantly endorsing personalities.

I wrote my opinion about F Ashkey. If you consider it a
"glowing endorsement" then it is a reflection of _MY views
about that particular SCI subscriber. Yes, I do endorse F
Ashkey, and I see nothing wrong in doing so. If you see a
problem in that, please point it out to me. You can be
assured that as in ALL the other profiles, the author of the
text will be clearly identified. The profile in question has
not been published yet, that's why my name does not appear
in there.

The SCI site's title must reflect its occupation and
contents. Our site deals with SCI related materials. I think
the title SCI site is very appropriate, and I don't see why
you find it misleading. If you have any suggestions, I
invite you to make them known. For some reason, you seem to
have been led to believe that the site is only open to a
limited number of SCIers. This is not true. ALL SCIers are
invited to participate and make a contribution to its
construction and upkeep.

As I mentioned above, the sources of all texts on the site
are well mentioned. This is as much true for the profiles
section as all the other sections. If you ever see a text
where the sources are not well indicated, please let me
know, I will correct that.

Also, the site is not exclusively _mine_. It is as much
yours as it is mine. If you find it to be not very serious,
then do something about it. Why not propose a serious
section? Or volunteer to work on one of the existing
sections to make them more serious? The SCI site is in a way
a reflection of SCI. As in SCI, there will be a mixture a
materials. Some very serious, some less serious. It is up to
the SCI subscribers to have their input. I can't put any
"serious" material their in your place.

The SCI site is not a Knee-jerk reaction to anything. It was
born because of a need and a desire to document SCI, to make
SCI a better discussion forum, to organize and shed light on
SCI's many different aspects, to provide a comprehensive
guide to SCI, to help new comers get more easily oriented,
to provide an information base concerning SCI matters which
is easily and permanently accessible, etc. There is no
attempt of polarizing "my people" against "their people" as
you put it. This is simply painting negatively a very good
and useful project. And you have absolutely no bases for
doing so. You are just imagining things and talking in the
air. I repeat once again, _anyone may make a contribution to
the site. As long as that contribution is in line with the
objectives of the site, they will be more than welcome. You
may for example submit your own profile (as some SCIers have
done), or write someone else's profile. Your submission will
be posted to SCI (as was mine), will benefit from the feed
back of all interested, and if there are no major objections
to its publication, it will be published.

> A Society.Culture

To me, a newsgroup discussion forum is a place to present
and discuss one's views and opinions. What may seem to _you
as a flamboyant endorsing of personalities, may seem as
stating some obvious facts to someone else. As the author of
the profile of F ashkey, I stand behind it with an open
mind. If there are any elements in there that you would like
to discuss, please point them out. You might change my
views.

Arman jAn,

I visited and enjoyed reading the profile you have compiled
of Mr Ashkey. It is indeed a known fact that Mr Ashkey
has posted many well-written posts to SCI with something
new to learn or to enjoy in nearly every article. I'd describe
him as touching, warm and wise. SCI would be a poor
place without him. [I am not sure how Mr Maheri was expecting
you to describe a man whose writings repays reading for its wisdom,
simplicity and depth.]

However, Arman jAn, I feel that no profile of Mr Ashkey
would be complete without some referene being made to his
enchantingly witty, exhilarating and hilarious works entitled:
[posted last July '98]

- ASGHAR AGHA ARRESTED
- Asghar Agha Arrested (Parody Continued) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[A MUST read for Kamran and Erooni jAn, btw]

The reviews included:

Beautiful work. I'm changing my name to asghar :)
ghei...@my-dejanews.com

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Good luck and
thanks for this post.
Sade...@freedom.com

I am wondering what would happen if every one
changes his/her name to asghar agha.

I wonder if Mr Ashkey would mind reposting the above
mentioned articles to SCI. Have you read them, btw?
Please let me know what you think.

Let me get this right. You wrote your 'opinion' about an individual
contributor to SCI without telling others it was your own opinion of
him. Then, you called your opinion of this individual his 'profile'.
Then you asked people to go and visit another dubious creation of
yours called "SCI site", no less, and tell you their opinions about
your opinion of this individual which you called his 'profile'!

I don't mean to be rude, Mr. Taj, but seems to me somebody's very
confused here, to say the least.

Yes, one can write the profile of someone else. It is done all
the time. And everytime it is be a matter of opinion.

I didn't mean to confuse you. Things will be perhaps more clear
to you if you go to the profiles section of the site and have a
look around. It's quite simple actually. We try to represent each
SCIer by a brief description which can take diffrenet forms. You
should try it. It is fun.

Yes, I remember Asghar Aaghaa :-)) And you are absolutely right.
No F ashkey profile will be complete without it. In fact, given
the symbolic value of Asghar Aaghaa, and the references made to
him from time to time on SCI, I think it is an essential piece of
information to add. I am thinking that perhaps we can publish
those two articles (with Mr. Ashkey's permission) on the SCI
site, and make the links from F Ashkey's profile. Would you like
to do the honors of adding Asghar Agha to F Ashkey's profile? I
will copy the text part of the profile below for your
convenience.

Thank you and much regards,

Arman

F Ashkey is what may be described as
the gold mine of SCI. His vast knowledge
on a great number of subjects ranging
from history, politics, economics,
sociology, theology, world affairs,
literature... (to only name a few!) is
absolutely mind boggling. Here's a man
with eyes as sharp of that as an eagle's,
seeing through the best lies, and the
most convoluted arguments.

F Ashkey is a people's man, a nationalist
through and through, whose ideals do
not allow him any compromises when it
comes to his beloved country and her
people.

His presence on SCI has been for many a
blessing from the above. His articles are
always well written, full of new
information, well researched, accurate
and amazingly easy to follow and
understand despite the fact that they
often deal with very complex issues.
Great examples demonstrating how clear
thinking can lead to simplicity. A true
teacher by nature, F Ashkey is always
ready to explain and re-explain the most
basic and fundamental subjects to those
who show an interest in learning.

To top it all off, F Ashkey is a most
humble and modest man, with a keen and
subtle sense of humour that he uses
most elegantly to get his sometimes very
subtle points across.

A real jewel!

LOL! It does sound stupid and moronic to a rational mind but you must
understand that these anti-Iranian characters are extremely edgy these days and
have lost all rhyme and reason a long long long time ago.
It is a sad site seeing them humiliate themselves so much here as if they don't
get it in their everyday life and need more of it here.
Ver sad indeed, I feel very sorry for them.

In March 1998, Mr Ashkey 'Asghar Agha_ed' us all into
admiration. To read about Asghar Agha is to spend a
few minutes being entertained and, on occasions, moved
by a tale told by an amiable companion who is full of
humanity, good humour and common sense.

In these posts, as in so much of what he writes, you stick in
your thumb and you pull out a plum. Yummy! ;-)

Please have a look and let me know if there is anything else. If
there are no other constructive critisisms or comments, I will be

Wow ... Arman khAn,

Very impressive! Very impressive indeed!

So ...;-)) when you were doing _my profile,
you thought about it for about 0.8 seconds and then quickly typed,
"She is scary but will make you thoughtful, put picture of a dog next

Well, the only thing I can say in my defense is that I am getting

Mr. Ashkey should not be embarrassed about this at all. I
proposed to do it for myself and other SCIers (past, present and
to come). I am only glad and thankful that he gave us permission
to write his profile and use his poems. What is written in that
page is the part of F Ashkey that is visible to us on SCI.
