TEHRAN Bahman is a month reminiscent of the glorious revolution the
people of Iran accomplished in 1979 under the leadership of the late
Imam Khomeini. We are now standing at the threshold of 22nd anniversary
of the Islamic Revolution. In the course of these years, the
revolution, the system and the people have left behind many ups and
downs, each of which is counted as a valuable experience.
The Islamic Revolution is undoubtedly regarded as a fateful event in the
history of the people of Iran. It is appropriate to examine different
aspects of the revolution every year.
We should think where we started, how we achieved victory, how others
dealt with the movement and the demands of the people, what our
policies and plans were, what barriers prevented us, what our
achievements were and in which aspects we failed.
The Islamic Revolution achieved victory at a time when the international
system was bipolar. In one part of the globe the Western capitalists
led by the U.S. and in the other part of our planet, the Eastern
socialist countries led by the Soviet Union had formed alignments. The
important point is that the two blocs were at the climax of their
political and military power.
This state of affairs had convinced a large number of intellectuals and
thinkers in developing and Third World countries that dependence on
either bloc was vital for survival on the international scene.
This outlook applied more strongly to Iran, since at that time Iran was
the biggest American base in the strategic Middle East region.
Moreover, existence of numerous oil reserves in Iran and its great
consumer market greatly benefited the U.S.
Under such circumstances, no political analyst could predict the
possibility of Iran's victory and its liberation from the circle of
U.S. satellites.
With the outset of the Islamic Revolution, the first analyses presented
by political circles throughout the world stated that the revolution
had been launched with socialist motivations and that it was the
outcome of the Cold War between the West and the East. Massive
propaganda was unleashed in this respect, but the essence of the
revolution disclosed the emptiness of such analyses.
Other political commentators viewed the revolution as the result of
class differences. Still, others attributed the revolution to
modernism. On the basis of these comments, different groups,
associations and parties tried to impose their views on the revolution,
but the Iranian people only listened to Imam Khomeini, whose views only
promoted Islam, justice, freedom and independence.
Islam was presented by Imam Khomeini as a theory of revolution at a
time when revolutions were mostly inspired by Marxist theory. Armed
guerrilla struggles supported by socialist countries were regarded as
the only way to bring revolutions to victory.
After the victory of the revolution when different comments from
Eastern and Western circles emerged in this respect, Imam Khomeini
presented another unique analysis. The Imam said: "Undoubtedly, the
Islamic Revolution in Iran is distinct from all other revolutions in
terms of emergence and struggle and incentive behind the revolution and
uprising. There is no doubt that the revolution was a divine gift
bestowed on the oppressed people of Iran."
This analysis was incomprehensible for many of the domestic and foreign
political analysts because in the political theories taught at
universities, such a doctrine did not exist. But the realities caused
the revolution launched by the people of Iran to be recognized in the
world under the title of "revolution in the name of God".
Imam's analysis of the formation and victory of the Islamic Revolution
was not based on any of the prevailing theories but rather revolved
around Qoranic principles, which gave glad tidings of victory to
believers and Muslims, provided that they also strived for religion.
On the basis of this divine and monotheistic outlook, continuation of
the path and survival of the revolution are not feasible unless the
Iranian people act according to religion and all its principles. In
this respect, Imam Khomeini believed that "undoubtedly, secret of the
survival of the Islamic Revolution lies in its very secret of victory.
And the people know this secret, and the future generations will study
in history books that the two main pillars of the revolution were
divine incentive and sublime goal of Islamic government, thanks to the
nation's unity and solidarity. I advise the present and future
generations that if they want to establish Islam and rule of Allah and
curtail the hands of the colonialists from the country, do not lose
this divine incentive prescribed by God the Almighty in the Qoran."
Another point underscored by Imam Khomeini was the necessity of constant
efforts to realize the ideals and goals of the revolution. This effort
is worthy of consideration from different aspects. The effort should be
made in all economic, political, social and cultural arenas. However,
one of the most important arenas of activity is the struggle for re-
understanding Islam and the laws and commands enshrined in the holy
Qoran aimed at fulfilling the needs of mankind.
Today, there are various achievements in these areas, but there are
also some problems in this regard. Obviously, one can attribute
different causes to these problems, but this sketchy paper attempts to
deal with the essence of the Imam's last will and testament that
cautions us against forgetting our divine incentive.
Two factors seem to play a greater role in diluting our divine
incentive. First, lack of understanding of the divine laws and
commands; and second, selfishness. It is obvious that selfishness and
attachment to worldly pleasures are major hurdles in the way of
achieving lofty goals of the Islamic Revolution.
Islamic Revolution is a divine gift bestowed on the Iranian people, who
should try hard to safeguard and preserve it. But of course, the greater
responsibility lies with the government officials.
It is true that the revolution is today faced with several problems, but
removal of these problems is by no means impossible. We should trample
upon our selfishness, and enhance our trust in Allah, in which case God
will fulfill His promise and help us in getting over our problems.
Finally, in the same way that the Islamic Revolution emerged victorious
by following the line of Imam Khomeini, likewise, in order to
perpetuate this revolution, it is also necessary to follow the thoughts
and views of the late Imam. We should not allow even an iota of doubt
in this belief..BAKtions us against forgetting our divine incentive.
