As 19-year-old Boston bombings suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev awaits trial,
a legion of Americans -- often teenage girls -- has been furiously
filling the Internet with fan club sites and support groups.

Alisha, a blond, blue-eyed 18-year-old from Topeka, Kan., is one of
these Tsarnaev's "fans." Using her Twitter handle @keepitbluntedd,
Alisha has been questioning the government's case against the younger
Tsarnaev brother.


I can not stress this enough, there's so many holes in this story, we
live in a country where you're innocent til proven guilty.

In an interview with the New York Post, Alisha even said she was
planning on getting a quote of the teen ("If you have the knowledge
and the inspiration all that's left is to take action") tattooed on
her upper arm.

"He was just this pothead 19-year-old boy who didn't care," she told
The Post. "I don't see it."

Although Alisha has decided not to get the tattoo, she has not backed
down from her support for Tsarnaev. And she is far from alone.

Using the hashtag #freejahar, as well as handles -- like @FreeJaha,
@Fighting4Jahar or @PrayForJaharr -- that contain Tsarnaev's nickname,
the suspect's supporters are easy to find online.

There are also multiple Facebook pages, such as the "Dzhokhar Tsarnaev
Free Jahar movement," which currently boasts 6,600 members. Many of
these pages express similar sentiments to those expressed in the
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Free Jahar movement's "About" section:

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a young man of 19 years of age's life has been
stolen and has been made into a public object of hate, created by the
inaccurate reports by the media.
We believe in innocent until proven guilty by undeniable evidence,
which so far has not been provided.


According to Yahoo! Shine, fans have made bracelets, and the phrase
"too pretty to be guilty" is becoming a common refrain.

Adding Insult to Injury

The massive, angry demonstrations and attacks on U.S. embassies
sweeping through the Muslim world comes in the context of a campaign
against Muslims carried out by the U.S. government in an attempt to
justify their wars against Muslim countries. This campaign includes
preemptive prosecutions where FBI agents create phony plots and
encourage behavior that can be prosecuted and attacks on civil
liberties at home; the Peter King hearings; NYPD spying on Muslims;
raids and detentions; and states that have passed anti-Muslim laws. It
includes the physical attacks on Muslims, on mosques and on people who
racist whites think are Muslims, like Sikhs, and opposition to Muslim
building projects like Park 51 and much more.

This atmosphere encourages the kind of hateful anti-Muslim video that
was produced. At some point, it had to be expected that Muslims around
the world would react. The U.S. will spin this by focusing on the film
and implying that all Muslims are crazy and do not support freedom of
speech. However, this is a self-serving lie and a diversion from the
real root causes. Humiliation is a necessary component of the cycle of
abuse. It should be noted that similar attacks on Judaism and the
Holocaust are prosecuted as hate crimes and that artists and musicians
who have created work offensive to many Christians have been vilified
and threatened.

We need to put the blame squarely where it belongs -- on the U.S.,
which has been at war with the Muslim world in order to dominate and
control resources and power. We have seen the utter destruction of
Libya, Iraq and Afghanistan; drone attacks on Muslim countries we are
not at war with, including Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia; and the
persistent economic starvation and political suffocation of the Muslim
people in Egypt, Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and
other countries by US backed dictators enforcing Western dominance in
the region. So-called “targeted assassinations” kill many innocent non-
combatants and are viewed simply as “collateral damage” rather than
murders, demonstrating how little the U.S. government values non-
Western lives.


The fact that these protests came as a surprise to the U.S. State
Department is a reflection of the arrogance and stupidity of a
government that claims it is bringing freedom and democracy to the
region through drone missiles, sanctions, assassinations, and
occupations and expects the people to be grateful.

The unfortunate deaths of the American Ambassador in Libya and members
of his security team are the direct result of violent, hypocritical,
internally conflicted US policies in the region, whether the
unanticipated result of the rioting triggered by the film or blowback
for longstanding U.S. atrocities rooted in the ongoing wars. It is
long past time to reject those policies and begin a new era based on
respect for the dignity and humanity of every individual and of all
the various cultures and religions of the world.

We must stand in solidarity with all the victims of U.S.-sponsored
violence and repression.

We don't know yet know why the jury decided not to convict anyone in
this case. "It was a very difficult case with a lot of evidence,"
jury foreman Jeffrey Agron, a school principal, told the Miami
Herald.
"People see evidence in different ways. There were different takes
that people had." It's possible that jurors were struggling with the
very thing that makes the Liberty City case so typical of the Justice
Department's war on terrorism: it feels phony.


The entire situation was concocted by the government. The warehouse
was paid for by the FBI, and the defendants moved their operations
there at the suggestion of an undercover informant who was also paid
by the FBI. The swearing-in ceremony was led by the informant -- who
at another point also suggested a plan to bomb FBI offices in Miami.
"The case was written, produced and directed by the FBI," defense
attorney Albert Levin said in his closing arguments.

Were the consequences of underestimating terrorists neither so grave
nor so fresh, it would be tempting to look at the seven men indicted
on conspiracy charges for plotting to blow up the Sears Tower and
laugh. Not so much at the suspects--five American citizens, a legal
immigrant from Haiti and an illegal Haitian national, all of whose
hardscrabble bios make them seem more sad than sinister--but at those
who considered them a real threat to wage, as Attorney General
Alberto Gonzales put it, "a full ground war against the United
States." FBIdeputy director John Pistole conceded that the men, part
of a Miami group called Seas of David, were "more aspirational than
operational," and its aspirations reeked of ineptitude. When alleged
ringleader Narseal Batiste, 32, presented an FBI informant he thought
was an al- Qaeda operative with a list of materials necessary for
jihad, it did not include explosives. Instead Batiste asked for
$50,000, radios, uniforms and steel-toed boots. Was the plan to blow
the Sears Tower up or kick it down?
