London - A criminology student in Bradford has been arrested on
suspicion of the murders of three missing sex workers, Suzanne
Blamires, Shelley Armitage and Susan Rushworth. All the three women
were friends and worked in Bradford's red light area. The
investigation has rekindled memories of the 'Yorkshire Ripper' Peter
Sutcliffe, who captured his victims in the same area and terrorised
Bradford 30 years ago.
Police have found the remains of a human body floating in a river
near Bradford and has confirmed that those are of 36-year-old
prostitute Suzanne Blamires. The murder of one of three missing
prostitutes has also been captured on CCTV and investigating teams
are checking the details. Blamires had vanished last Friday, while
two other Bradford sex workers- Shelley Armitage vanished on April
26, and Susan Rushworth has been missing for almost a year.
The murders of three other women in the same area stretching back 20
years were also being probed. A 40-year-old man, Stephen Griffiths,
was arrested on suspicion of the three murders by armed police. He
lives on the edge of Bradford's red-light district. He is now being
questioned as a suspected serial killer.
Griffiths is a PhD student at the University of Bradford and is
believed to be studying criminal justice. He has been researching
serial killers.
On the social networking website MySpace, he called himself 'Ven
Pariah' -- a mythical, demonic figure -- and featured a list of some
of Britain's most notorious criminals. He also recently reviewed a
book called Women And The Noose, a history of female crime, and was
trying to buy three DVD box sets on mass murderers and serial
killers, according to the Sky news.
Police have been granted extra time, until Thursday evening, to quiz
the suspect, who was held on Monday. Assistant Chief Constable Jawaid
Akhtar said, "It is a very thorough and painstaking inquiry into
three missing women, all of them sex workers, with all the necessary
resources and expertise devoted to it."
