As the chorus for Uttar Pradesh's poor governance is
getting shriller by the day, a desperate Congress in the
absence of a concrete theme for the coming general election
is looking no further than the Nehru-Gandhi family for the
much needed shot in the arm. It needs no reiteration that
the UPA's inefficient leadership is responsible for the
unprecedented price rise and the resultant food crisis.
However, what is appalling is the fact that in an election
year, when there is a growing need for the party to present
a unified face to the electorate to ride over the crisis,
senior Congress leaders are engaged in clamouring for
leadership change by seeking to project Mr Rahul Gandhi as
the prime ministerial candidate.
The Congress may be desperate to come out of the Catch-22
situation. But it must understand that this shortsighted
response will not work. Instead, it reflects a lack of
confidence in the present incumbent, besides leaving room
for the Opposition to make political capital out of it.
Given that Mr Gandhi is still an apprentice in the field of
politics, the very fact that he declined a Ministerial post
in the UPA Government has fuelled speculation that he is
being groomed for the top post. In this backdrop,
assertions by Human Resource Development Minister Arjun
Singh assume significance.
While a section in the Congress believes that the move is
aimed at undermining Mr Manmohan Singh's authority, others
are of the opinion that it is just a ruse to jettison the
NDA's efforts of projecting Mr LK Advani as its prime
ministerial candidate.
Though Congress president Sonia Gandhi has tried hard to
make people believe that the entire drama was not
orchestrated at her behest, it remains to be seen how far
she has succeeded. Whatever, the Congress spokesperson may
say, it cannot be denied that the culture of sycophancy has
been the hallmark of the party. The Congress, since
independence, has been closely tagged with the Nehru-Gandhi
dynasty.
Right from the time of Mrs Indira Gandhi, the Congress has
concocted ways to guarantee that a member of the Nehru-
Gandhi dynasty occupied the top post in the party and the
Government. It is an open secret that those loyal to the
family have gained lucrative positions, while dissenters
have been shown the door.
