Indian politics and the Nehru-Gandhi family can't be separated from
each other. Some people feel that both are complementary. As far as
the supporters and ideologues of the Congress are concerned, they feel
that the Congress party is not capable of remaining organized and
extend its base without the patronage and leadership of the Nehru-
Gandhi family. This may be a matter of relief for the Congressmen but
the anti-Congress elements, specially the principal opposition
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) usually accuse that “the Congress is
slave of the Nehru-Gandhi family. This family has made the Congress
party hostage. Congress encourages dynasty politics and the leaders of
the Congress party maintain their political career by indulging
sycophancy of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
These accusations by the opposition are not a part of any healthy and
democratic criticism. In fact this is the result of frustration and
jealous of the opposition, particularly the BJP. If only the Nehru-
Gandhi family was or is the worthy of criticism, then why the BJP
itself has given place to the members of that very family (Maneka
Gandhi, widow of Late Sanjai Gandhi & Varun Gandhi, his son) in the
party. What led the BJP to adopt this strategy that on one side you
target the Nehru-Gandhi family and on the other, you use the members
of the same family as star campaigners? This strategy of the BJP is
either a failed attempt to cut 'iron with iron' or the party itself
seems to be unsuccessfully trying to gain from the attraction and
glamour of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
If we try to see from the above prism, then we see that Maneka Gandhi
is a member of the BJP since last two decades. She was also a Minister
in the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. The
reason behind she made Minister by the BJP was not any additional
political competence or qualification found in her. Indeed it was the
honour by the BJP leaders to the 'rebel' daughter in law of Nehru-
Gandhi family. With passage of time, her son Varun Gandhi too became
mature. This handsome, attractive and dexterous in conversation youth
seemed to be talented like his father late Sanjay Gandhi. But the
purification by her mother made him an adversary of his own paternal
family. Things didn't settle here, in fact to insult the Congress
Party, particularly Sonia Gandhi; Maneka taught that lesson to her
son, which nobody in the family had ever imagined of. And that was the
lesson of extreme Hindutva under the patronage of the BJP. The
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological source of the BJP,
and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) too supported Varun on this
'venomous' communal path.
While Sonia Gandhi was giving the lessons based on secularism to her
son Rahul Gandhi, Maneka Gandhi too saw something in her son which she
felt would support her political career. The way in which Maneka
Gandhi left her Pilibhit constituency for her son and herself became
candidate from the neighbouring constituency of Aonla, it became clear
that on the lines of constituencies of Raebareli and Amethi, she too
wants to secure both Pilibhit & Aonla constituencies. But during the
2009 general elections, both Maneka & Varun got estimate of the ground
reality. While Varun Gandhi was contesting the first election of his
life, Maneka Gandhi too was contesting first time from Aonla
constituency. When Varun Gandhi felt that his first election should
not become a danger to his political life, he delivered such an
objectionable, controversial and communal speech during the election
campaign, which the BJP leaders too usually avoid publicly. To ensure
his victory by polarizing the Hindu votes in his favour, Varun in his
public meetings vowed all the Hindus to get together. During same
speech, he made dangerous and objectionable comments against the
Muslims.
Consequently Varun was imprisoned under the National Security Act by
the Uttar Pradesh government on charge of spreading communal tension.
As the elections were not concluded, so the BJP had to face difficult
time. On one hand, the party leadership, in order to maintain its
secular vote bank intact (if it had), was trying to show itself
distanced from the controversial speech of Varun, on the other, the
party started attempts to make him hero and star campaigner of the
party. The RSS & the VHP too patted on Varun's back. Election
Commission of India was accused of being corrupt as he just advised
the BJP, not to make Varun a candidate. Instead of following the
advice, the party president Rajnath Singh went to meet Varun Gandhi in
jail. This meeting of him sent straight signals to the voters that
though the party leaders might be trying to distance themselves from
Varun's venomous speech, but actually this is the double character of
the party. When Varun was freed from jail after about a month as a
result of relief given by the Supreme Court, he firstly went to the
VHP office in Delhi and had closed door meetings.
During the elections, Varun Gandhi went to many constituencies as a
star campaigner of the BJP. Figures tell that the BJP lost most of the
seats on which Varun Gandhi campaigned for the BJP candidates. Trying
to counter Sonia Gandhi & Rahul Gandhi, Maneka & Varun had to give
full time in their own constituencies. Besides this, they too had to
give communal touch to the campaign, and then only this mother-son duo
was able to win their seats. Contrary to this Sonia Gandhi & Rahul
Gandhi, fully confident of their victory, were campaigning across the
country. Post election figures reveal that most of the candidates for
whom Rahul Gandhi campaigned, won.
Anyhow the new Lok Sabha is in place. BJP is defeated badly and the
Congress is way ahead. Now within the BJP, there is debate that
whether Varun proved to be profitable or detrimental. Varun Gandhi is
being condemned in open voices within the BJP. Varun repeatedly flayed
the accusations by saying that the CD is doctored and his voice is not
in it. According to forensic test report, the speech in the CD is of
Varun Gandhi. Unfortunately, even after the report, Maneka Gandhi is
still falsifying it with pertness and favouring Varun by saying that
it is not his voice. The entire country believes that this
objectionable, unconstitutional and uncivilized speech is delivered by
Varun himself.
A large group of the BJP leaders is rendering Varun controversy
responsible besides other factors for party's defeat. On the other
side, it seems that Varun himself is in favour of following the path
of aggressive Hindutva. It is speculated that Maneka is trying to make
way for Varun for the post of the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.
Recently Varun Gandhi visited the RSS office in Lucknow & there he had
long secret talks with the Sangh leaders. Now this is to be seen
whether the BJP, ever critical of the Nehru-Gandhi family, would gain
something by keeping Varun with it, or it would remain at losing end.
For now, the mention of Varun among the reasons of defeat is not a
good sign for him. In future, it would become clear whether Varun
proves to be a boon or a bane for the BJP.

Thank you !
The BJP MP is currently out on bail.
With reports of Mayawati Government considering the possibility of
setting up a fast track court to expedite the trial, the BJP MP would
need all his luck to get out of the problem this time.
For records, On June 25, a letter seeking permission to prosecute
Varun under Section 153A of the IPC in cases pending against him in
the CJM court was dispatched by Pilibhit administration to state home
department (153A deals with acts designed to spread enmity between two
sections of society).
UP police on March 17 had registered an FIR against BJP’s Varun Gandhi
in Pilibhit under section 153A for allegedly making inflammatory
remarks with communal overtones.
Earlier, a petition was filed today in the Allahabad High Court
questioning the election of Varun Gandhi to the Lok Sabha form the
Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh.
V M Singh, the Congress candidate who is the maternal uncle of Varun
Gandhi, the loser in the recently concluded general election, has
filed this petition.
Varun Gandhi had gained the votes by spreading hatred about a
particular community by making inflammatory speeches, said Singh’s
advocate U N Sharma.
Singh alleged that Varun’s mode of campaigning amounted corrupt
practice as per section 123(3) of the Representation of Peoples Act.
Varun made his electoral debut from Pilibhit, which was earlier,
represented by his mother Maneka Gandhi. Varun was arrested under
National Security Act for allegedly making hate speeches in an
election rally in Pilibhit. (ANI)
A former Union minister, Rajiv Pratap Rudy is now a national
spokesperson of the BJP. Mr Rudy recently spoke to BAPPADITYA PAUL on
the post-poll controversies that are pilloring the BJP and the saffron
brigade’s plan for rejuvenation.
After 2004, this time too, you lost the Lok Sabha election against
Lalu Prasad. What really went wrong?
I must appreciate one point: whatever be the impression about Mr
Prasad outside, in the past five years, his contribution to the
parliamentary constituency of Chhapra (Saran) has been immense. I
don’t think in any district of Bihar, ever since Independence, so much
investment was proposed with several railway projects to the tune of
over Rs 8,000 crore. So, a parliamentary constituency getting so large
an investment probably had a positive impact on the electorate in Mr
Prasad’s favour. Yet, I increased my vote share by about one lakh from
the previous election. Out of the 40 Lok Sabha constituencies in
Bihar, there are 26 seats where the winning candidates got less votes
than me. That’s why, I lost the election, but don’t stand defeated.
But wouldn’t these repeated failures affect your political career?
No, I don’t think so. My party chose to pitch me against Mr Prasad
because I was considered the fittest one to take on a leader of his
stature. I may have lost, but the fact remains that my candidature
from Saran created a real buzz and everyone was forecasting Mr
Prasad’s defeat in the seat. Even Mr Prasad was so unsure of his win
from Saran that he was compelled to contest from the Patna
constituency also as a fallback plan. And the deceptive wave that Mr
Prasad is losing in Saran adversely affected his party’s poll
prospects across Bihar. So, I virtually became a martyr and my
martyrdom in Saran gave victory to the ruling NDA in the state.
Coming to the BJP’s poor show in this Lok Sabha election, what
according to you went wrong?
It was because of the pre-election contradictions, clearly visible
now, that we could not fare as expected in the polls. But I personally
feel that following the party’s National Executive meeting in Delhi on
21-22 June, the contradictions have more or less been sorted out. All
the grievances have been vented. All those view points, which were not
taken into consideration earlier, were considered and those aspects
which are important for the party to reorganise itself, have been
taken note of. I believe things are falling in line now and we have
the stamina to face the defeat and start the resurgence process.
But post-election, a serious question is occupying the public space.
That is, which Hindutva the BJP stands for ~ the “inclusive” Hindutva
does that the party puts on record or Varun Gandhi’s brand of Hindutva
that seems to be in practice?
It is really a sad situation that we need to define Hindutva again and
again, especially in the BJP. The BJP and the RSS have always talked
of Hindutva in the inclusive sense. The inclusive Hindutva which talks
of tolerance, which talks of giving space to all religious
denominations. We talk of constitutional propriety; we talk about
nationalism or Indiaism, which is part of a larger geo-cultural
concept. For us, all these sum up to a tolerant Hindutva and there is
no scope for fundamentalism in it.
But Varun Gandhi’s speeches during the campaign did not toe this
line. . .
Absolutely not. (What Varun said) was never the party line and I say
it categorically.
Why didn’t the BJP stop Varun when he went on making speeches
violating the party line?
The party disassociated itself from his words. We were against the
National Security Act being imposed on him, but no one at any given
point of time endorsed his speeches.
Yet the BJP did not deny him a ticket?
That does not happen in politics. If an individual commits a mistake
then there are processes in the party (based) on which, one has to
take a decision. The fact that the NSA was imposed on Varun created a
situation that he had to be given the opportunity (to contest on party
ticket). But we have categorically said that any individual should not
become so important that he makes an ideological benchmark. Varun is
not a benchmark for the BJP’s ideology, but if you want to make him a
benchmark, it is for you to decide and not us.
In an interview to NDTV, Jaswant Singh too has said that there was
ambiguity on the BJP’s definition of Hindutva. How does the party
response to that?
Mr Singh raised the issue prior to the party National Executive
meeting in Delhi. But when the National Executive took place on 21-22
June, it was again reiterated that when the BJP talks about Hindutva ~
it is the inclusive one.
Mr Singh is now completely convinced, for he only wanted this
explanation.
What about Yaswant Sinha? He has resigned from party positions calling
for the top brass to take responsibility for the poll defeat.
He has expressed his point of view, and I think he did cross,
emotionally trespassed, his own position by tendering resignation from
party posts and that’s why his resignation was instantly accepted.
But what about the point that he has raised?
There are many issues that are raised and all such issues were raised
openly during the National Executive meeting. But Mr Sinha made his
point prior to the meeting and tendered his resignation. If he was
there at the National Executive, he could have raised the issue. But
he crossed the emotional barrier and that was a mistake. As far as
fixing the responsibility for the electoral defeat is concerned, the
National Executive heard all viewpoints and then gave LK Advani a full
mandate to act on those.
While the party has removed Uttarakhand chief minister BC Khanduri for
the poll debacle in that state, no heads are rolling at the central
level . . .
The change of leadership in Uttarakhand was in consideration much
before the parliamentary elections. It is not an outcome of the
defeat. The change in leadership there cannot be exclusively
attributed to as fixing the responsibility for poll debacle.
What about the issue of passing the party leadership to younger
hands?
This is a wrong question being posed. The BJP possibly has the largest
spectrum of young leaders and the party does not only have first
general leaders; we already have in place the second generation or
third generation leaders and the fourth generation is just behind. We
have or had chief ministers like Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Vasundhara
Raje, Sushil Kumar Modi or for that matter Narendra Modi ~ they are
all young and can easily be categorised as the second or third
generation leaders. Then we had several young Union ministers whether
it was me, Shahnawaz Hussain, Ravi Shankar Prasad ~ many of them. So,
to say that there is a resistance in the BJP to allow the second
generation leaders to come forward, is wrong. The second and third
generation leaders are already playing very critical roles in the
party. By simply positioning someone in the Congress party who is a
part of the dynastic rule, does not mean that the BJP which has hard
groomed individuals, do not have a young face.
Can Narendra Modi be the BJP’s future face?
Well, Mr Modi is the chief minister of Gujarat and I think he has done
very well there.
So you are not endorsing Mr Modi as the party face?
I am not the right person to decide his fate and being the party
spokesperson, I cannot give my personal opinion.
Lastly, what are the BJP’s rejuvenation plans after this electoral
rout?
It is not a rout; it’s a setback. The people of India have given the
BJP the mandate to be the principal Opposition party and we still run
six state governments.
The National Executive has chalked out an action plan that begins with
the new membership drive and then organisational elections.

The BJP’s youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), on Monday
flaunted Varun Gandhi as a prize catch as it paraded its own Young
Turks at a function where senior party leader Sushma Swaraj took a dig
at the media for being swayed by the “gore chitte, chikne
chupde” (fair, chocolate-faced) leaders of Rahul Gandhi’s team, even
as she alleged that the media “gave the BJP’s young MPs the short
shrift”.
The BJYM function, that had a banner upholding the “primacy of
ideology”, presented mementos to its young MPs, beginning with Varun,
followed by Shahnawz Hussein and others like Dushyant Singh, Anurag
Thakur, Sanjay Jaiswal, Saroj Dubey, J Shanta, Nishikant Thakur, Jyoti
Dhurve and Arjun Munda.
Even as Varun, Dushyant, Anurag and Sanjay come from entrenched
political families, Sushma accused the Congress of perpetuating
virasat ki rajniti (dynastic politics). “MPs like Meenakshi Natrajan
get prominence because they are attached to the office of Congress
general secretary (Rahul Gandhi). Our own MPs don’t get that kind of
prominence,” added Sushma, prompting Varun to say “involve her
(Meenakshi) with us (in BJP)” that had the gathering in splits
Varun Gandhi found himself virtually friendless at the BJP National
Executive meet here.
Gandhi, whose hate-speeches created controversy for him and for the
BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, was under attack at the two-day meet
which concluded on Sunday.
"At our office-bearers meeting two days back, two eminent colleagues
of ours affirmed their faith in Hindutva but cautioned against any
narrow, bigoted, anti-Muslim interpretation being put on it," senior
BJP leader L K Advani said in his concluding remarks on Sunday.
This was seen as an apparent attempt to distance himself from Gandhi's
hate-speech. His reference was to BJP leaders Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and
Shahnawaz Hussain who had contended even at the executive meeting that
Gandhi's speech had cost the party dearly

F Prev Next LPilibhit: Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday filed a
chargesheet against BJP MP from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi at a Chief
Judicial Magistrate's court here for his alleged hate speeches in
March during campaign for Lok Sabha polls.
"The chargesheet was filed this afternoon by investigating officer
Mani Ram Rao in a case registered with Barkhera police station under
section 153(A) (promoting enemity on religious grounds), 125 of
Representation of the People Act and other relevant sections of the
IPC on March 17," official sources said.
29-year-old Varun, who was arrested on March 29 by Uttar Pradesh
Police, is currently out on bail.
The state government had on July 3 granted sanction to Pilibhit police
to file a chargesheet against Varun.
"We have given the nod to the Pilibhit district administration to
start proceedings against Varun under the Section 153 A of the Indian
Penal Code (IPC) that deals with promoting enmity between different
groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence,
language etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony,"
a state home department official told news agencies after the
sanction. Reacting to the development, Varun Gandhi said he welcomed
the move. “I have full faith in the judiciary. My stand will be
vindicated,” he told mediapersons. He also added that the media should
now respect the sanctity of the judiciary. According to police, a
charge sheet was prepared against Varun Gandhi after forensic experts
confirmed that three CDs of the speeches he allegedly delivered in his
constituency in March were genuine.
Three criminal cases are registered against the young, first-time MP
from Pilibhit for his alleged hate speeches.
The first criminal case, relating to the anti-Muslim speech he
allegedly delivered at a public rally in Barkhera village of Pilibhit
district March 8, was registered March 17.
The second case was registered over the same incident at the behest of
the Election Commission, which took serious cognisance of the speech.
Yet another hate speech Varun Gandhi reportedly made was at Desh Nagar
locality of Pilibhit town March 7. A case for this speech was
registered March 19.
Is this hate speech too ?

The state Government had on July 3 granted sanction to Pilibhit police
to file a chargesheet against Varun.
The Pilibhit administration, after receiving the forensic report from
FSL Chandigarh that the CDs of Varun's inflammatory speeches were not
tampered with, had sought permission from the government to file
chargesheet against the BJP MP in June.
Cases were registered against Varun on March 17 at Barkheda police

delivering inflammatory speeches there on March 8. Another FIR was
registered against him on March 19 for allegedly delivering another
hate speech in Desh Nagar locality of Pilibhit town on March 7.
The cases were lodged under the provision of IPC including Section 153
(inciting communal feelings), Representation of People's Act and
violation of model code of conduct.
Chargsheet in Desh Nagar locality case is yet to be filed.
Varun was granted bail in two cases relating to alleged hate speeches
after his arrest but was charged under the National Security Act (NSA)
and spent three weeks in detention till he was granted conditional
bail on April 16 by the Supreme Court.
On May 8, an advisory Board in Uttar Pradesh held as invalid Varun's

Mayawati government to immediately drop charges under NSA against
Varun.
