Maheji village: Where survival depends on the women and sex
Maheji, Jalgaon - Towards midnight, a Toyota Qualis _
horn blowing _ screeches to a halt outside a fairly large
bungalow in Maheji village. Karim comes out and says,
"Please come in, we can decide the price later."
Inside, Reshma _ still rubbing the sleep out of her eyes
_ steps into the living room. Clients turn up at any
time. It's sex on demand, you see.
"What's your name? Who referred you here?" she enquires,
her father Karim standing just a few feet away. "Suresh,"
replies the "client", who has brought along two friends.
The following conversation ensues:
Suresh: Let's fix a price.
Reshma: Rs 2,000 for the dance. A few minutes' privacy
means another Rs 700.
Suresh: Rs 1,200. Don't you want us to come again?
Reshma: Nothing less. We have already quoted on the lower
side.
Suresh: No, it's Rs 1,500.
Reshma: OK.
It's Rs 1,500 alright, for an hour's cheap entertainment.
Maheji village, Jalgaon _ a village where every family's
income depends on the daughter's age and appearance. And
one where being a woman is a curse.
This village survives on prostitution, a tradition here.
So what if it falls under MLA and Minister for Food and
Civil Supplies, Suresh Jain's constituency? So what if
the gullies leading to the brothels are 10 km from his
farmhouse?
Brothels abound. Politicians and policemen are among the
guests welcomed by the men, most of whom don't work. It's
the rustle of currency that brings each household between
Rs 70,000 to Rs 1 lakh a month. Some of the 150-odd
unmarried, young women here also go to towns and cities
like Aurangabad, Jalna, Dhule, Nashik and, of course,
Mumbai to "work".
Here, female bondage begins at 16 _ when every girl
dreads the nath utarna ceremony. It's their initiation
into the sex trade where she entertains her first
customer. A rich client could pay upto Rs 1 lakh to spend
a night with a virgin. It's another assured source of
income.
Assured because the women are under constant
surveillance, are threatened and battered
psychologically, thrashed and even singed to ensure that
they "perform".
That's why Rajendra Choudhary and Mona's is a doomed love
story. Choudhary, an engineer, has been seeing Mona for
two years and is negotiating with her father Karim for
her hand in marriage. "She is dying and is fighting to
keep off clients," he says. Now, Mona is watched even
more carefully.
For the Maheji girls, marriage is a bad proposition.
While the family's men discourage the girls from
marrying, men from the nearby villages are not too keen
to marry a girl from Maheji.
"It is rare that a non-prostitute from Maheji gets
married into a respectable family. Even girls from
neighbouring villages are affected by the stigma," says
local resident Nitesh Patil. When asked about the
problems in Maheji, District Collector Prakash Sabde
expressed surprise and asked: "Where is this Maheji?"
However, Sabde later said he would have the matter
investigated. He also promised to ask the district
superintendent of police to confirm if there is any
conflict between the villages.
Back in the bungalow, business continues.
The sound of ghungroos heralds Reshma's return. She is
accompanied by two other girls, all three in bright
saris, mask like make-up and sari barely catching the
hip.
Clients are led to an adjoining room. Twisting and
turning, Reshma opens her act as the music system blares
out "Mere ishq ki devangi...", her feet trampling on
currency notes. To encourage clients to be generous,
Vicky _ Reshma's brother _ chucks some at his sister.
The hour is up. Still dancing Reshma approaches the
client, drapes her arm over his shoulder to keep him for
another hour _ every hour is lucrative. The ruse doesn't
work. They leave. No worries, a Trax saunters up.
Karim and Vicky ruh out to greet its occupants. Inside,
Reshma wipes away the perspiration and takes out a fresh
set of clothes. "The night never ends," says Reshma.
