Kochi - Just as skeptics had apprehended, Dharmarajan,
convict in the case pertaining to the infamous Suryanelli
serial rape scandal of 1996, on Wednesday retracted his
earlier disclosure that Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ
Kurien had raped the victim, then 16, and it was he who
had taken the Congress leader to the place where the girl
was being held captive.
In an affidavit he filed before the District and Sessions
Court in Thodupuzha, Idukki in response to a petition
filed by the victim seeking a probe against Kurien and
three others, Dharmarajan said he had made the
'disclosure' through a TV channel on February 11 under
the influence of alcohol in the hope that implicating
Kurien would benefit him in the case.
With this, the very basis of the victim's review petition
seeking orders for naming Kurien as an accused has
perhaps been lost, according to legal experts. The
victim, now 33, has remained firm all these years in her
allegation against Kurien that he had raped her but he
has steadfastly rejected the charge. The Supreme Court
had discharged Kurien from the case in 2007.
