The deer hunting tragedy should not have happened but it has happened
and my condolence goes to all those families of the deceased.
At this stage, it is in the hand of the law and we should not jump the
gun! Justice will be brought as per the law of the USA!! All I can say
is that this is an unprecedented case that involve ONE Hmong man - and
nothing more than that. This is NOT a normal practice of the Hmong
people.
But on another sour note and in reference to the above post and similar
views, at first - it is hard to imagine that that Hmong guy can kill
that many people but after reading some of the views expressed in here
and elsewhere, it is NOT hard at all NOW to imagine what that guy may
have to faced up to (in a face-to-face confrontation). If the views
expressed by some people in our cyber interaction here mean any thing,
it is a blessing that there is no more people got killed on that day.

I have met many lovely Hmong people here. The incident in Wisconsin at the
deer stand is rousing a nest of hornets and all the racists are coming out.
OTOH, this particular communitiy in the St. Paul area have kept to

A sixth hunter died Monday night from injuries suffered in a massacre
committed by Hmong immigrant Chai Vang. Denny Drew, 55, of Rice Lake,
died Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield, his family
announced. Two other people who were wounded in the attack remain
hospitalized.
The dead were identified as the landowner, Robert Crotteau, 42; his son
Joey Crotteau, 20; Al Laski, 43; Mark Roidt, 28; Jessica Willers, 27;
and Denny Drew, 55. Willers' father, Terry Willers, remained
hospitalized Tuesday in fair condition, while the other wounded hunter
was released.
Sawyer County Circuit Judge Norman Yackel ruled Tuesday there was
sufficient evidence that Vang committed six counts of first-degree
intentional homicide and two counts of attempted first-degree
intentional homicide. He set bail at $2.5 million. Vang will appear in
court Dec. 20, court records said.
Vang says the group made racist comments and told him to get off the
property. As he walked away, he says he saw one White man point a gun at
him and shoot. That's when he opened fire, according to court documents
filed Tuesday.
The documents also show that at one point, Vang looked up and saw one of
the men was still standing and Vang yelled, "You're not dead yet?" Vang
says he shot one more time at the man. He also told investigators, as he
was running away, he decided he did not want to shoot anybody else so he
threw the rest of his ammunition into a swamp.
Vang's brother, Sang Vang, 33, said the killer was provoked by
derogatory racial comments. "He is a reasonable person," he said.
One of the witnesses, a hunter who was wounded in the shootings, gave a
statement contradictory to Vang's. Lauren Hesebeck said a member of the
hunting party shot at Vang only after he started firing at them and that
no racist comments were made, according to court documents.
Sawyer County Sheriff James Meier said there is evidence that Vang was
"moving around" as he stalked his victims. "I can only assume by the
location of the bodies and the type of woods they were in, that he would
have had to be moving around in order to inflict that kind of damage on
that many people," Meier said.
Meier also said that Vang fired over 20 rounds at the hunters from his
semiautomatic, and that two victims were knocked from their all-terrain
vehicles as they approached the scene, while others were "chased down"
and shot in the back.
Vang, unmarried, is a part-time truck driver and the father of six
children. He served in the U.S. Army for six years and speaks "pretty
good English," the brother said. According to the Milwaukee Sentinel,
Vang achieved the status of "sharp shooter" while in the Army.
Vang had been arrested once before, on Christmas Eve 2001 in
Minneapolis, after brandishing a gun and telling his "wife" he was going
to kill her, said Ron Reier, a spokesman for the Minneapolis Police
Department. He was arrested on a felony complaint of domestic assault,
Reier said. He added there had been two domestic violence calls to his
home in the past year, but both were "resolved without incident."
Meanwhile, Fox News reported that Vang had been arrested twice for
threatening with a firearm, but the charges were dropped when the
girlfriend refused to testify. (The issues surrounding Vang's criminal
history remain cloudy due to extremely vague controlled media reports.)
"We don't really know what went wrong. We don't know," said Deu Khang,
describing herself as Vang's cultural wife, not his legal wife. "I am in
shock. I don't have anything to say. I don't know what to say."
Vang's mother, Sao Hang, 54, does not speak English and declined comment
through an interpreter.
Cha Vang is the son of Hmong leader General Vang Pao (pictured), a
well-known opium trafficker and former commander of the CIA's secret
army in Laos from 1960 to 1975. No details are available as to where
"General" Pao is at the present time.
There are roughly 74,000 Hmong immigrants in Wisconsin and Minnesota,
according to the 2000 census. Many of the very pushy Hmong consider
General Pao to be a "hero" and have demanded that numerous parks and
bridges [in both states] be named after him.

arrested 1000's of people...and NONE was Hmong.There are bad apple in

What if the role was reverse? Lets say that instead of 6 White it was
6 Hmong who got shot. Would there be a Hey you White people you have
to go back to where you came from. Where would the white people go?

think any White can claim their pureness of blood to any part of the
world. History have shown that the dominate ethnic have ravaged,

We should let this stuff go, considering we're all grown adults. Just
my 2 cents, it's not even worth going in circles like junior high kids
with these racist issues considering we should be doing more
productive things with our lives, like making sure our own family(ies)
don't go nuts over being bullied or better yet, bullying others. Sad
to see these things get carried over from grade school. I was born
here in the US with Hmong blood. I'm proud to be an American but I
also have pride in being a Hmong woman and the fact that I have a
unique cultural background to reflect on. It doesn't matter what
others say, unless you let it effect you. It does matter, however,
when violence is PROVOKED. There will always be the good and the evil
regardless of what race you are. I empathize with the ones who comes
in here and talk trash about the Hmong people because of your
frustrations and misunderstanding of many things. Regardless, what
good does it do you other than make you feel better about yourself and
the situation. I also understand my Hmong parents, uncles, aunties,
elders, and friends for your hard work and your own frustrations to
make living better for yourselves and your children. If my generation
think its difficult to work with both worlds, it's even harder for
them because they are at a disadvantage with this fast paced society.
Eventually down the road, we'll blend in with the rest of the country
just like the Irish, Italians, African Americans, Hispanics and so
forth. Hopefully most of us can learn to understand these conflicts
and provide comfort to the middle eastern (specifically the Iraqis)
who may now be the new refugees and immigrants. They want to
experience and provide the same freedom, rights, and opportunities
just like every one of us.

if these people have been a continual, long-running problem. This one
who shot the hunters is only a more hot-headed example. I don't
believe these Hmong would have been hassled out in the field
regularly, if they were not behaving out-of-bounds regularly. I give

Didn't I tell you guys that, the Christian collitions that handed out
goods for refugees in Laos during Vietnam War was there to brain wash
poor poeple to become a christianity? The word "Here is a gift from
God" and I was amazed how many were convinced to convert to
Chistianality without their consents and I was one of them. Help from
God with open arms to this country is like, I should always remain

Too bad, the more I have learned from this country history (Back in

Whether you believe it or not, anyone who is a naturalized citizen is an
American. Try reading the 14th amendment to the Constitution sometime. The
Hmong have exactly the same rights as you or I. It may read to you that "these
people have been a continual, long-running problem", but I suggest that that
could be because you see only what you want to see. It seems to me that the
community response to the Hmong has also been part of the problem. It is always
difficult for any community to accept "outsiders", people who are different.
Resorting to mob mentality will only bring more violence, and add to the
suspicion and hatred.
My question to you and to any reader is why haven't these people been invited to
participate in some hunts? They obviously like to hunt, so you have something
in common with them. Is that such a bad thing? It seems to me that, like any
immigrant that comes into this country (i.e., the rest of us), we have to be
shown the ground rules. If they don't understand the concept of property, then
it is the community's responsibility to explain it to them. The best way to do
that is to invite them out into the countryside on just such a hunt, and explain
to them just what property rights are all about. Show them your fences and
explain what "no tresspassing" means, and what the consequences are of ignoring
those signs. Show them that Americans are responsible, and know how to treat
each other with respect and dignity. Iy you treat them with respect and
dignity, they will reciprocate. They are Americans too and obvioiusly want to
be a part of the American dream. They are not the enemy. If you don't accept
them in your community, then you are only going to have more problems in the
future. The way to solve this issue is to build bridges, not walls.
