Does anyone else really love lauwa'e ferns, you know those shade-loving
native hawaiian native ferns that are great to grow in your yard? Love
the beautiful color of the broad leaves with spores on the backside. Love
the way it sends out runners on the ground from which new ferns sprout.
But most of all, I love the smell of freshly crushed lauwa'e leaves which
have a beautiful fragrance similar to maile. Ahhh... love those lauwa'e
ferns.

P.S. Happy to see "hawaii.gardening" get off the ground, if you pardon my
lousy pun. :)

Eh Nathan, I love those lauwa'e ferns, too, and thanks for your "poem"
about them. Another of their nice features is that they are very
forgiving if you snip off a few fronds to use for this and that. My wife
and I often use them in flower arrangements for the apartment, even though
we have to filch a few on the sly in our condominium complex.

I probably should post this question separately, but here goes: does
anyone know where I can find a picture of pikake on the Web? I have
looked through most of the Nation of Hawaii images with no success (maybe
I just didn't go far enough). Suggestions would be welcome here. You
see, I think that pikake is growing all around me right now, and I think I
know the plant and the flower, but I'm a little ashamed to ask anyone face
to face. After all, I ought to know. Especially since this subject came
up here not too long ago when I was too busy to read the thread before it
passed into oblivion on my server.

Aloha,

David

Yes, We would try to grow them on our makai farm as part of the decor of
our rock gardens if I could get starts and knowledge. I trade with
Kainaliu Gardensin Kona. This beautiful fern deserves to be exemplared in
public as well as private gardens. Mahalo, cgs
